Maybe it has something to do with the blackout?
If they have no air conditioning, perhaps they switched to dimmer lights in the studio.

I have DirecTV too, and have been wondering the same thing. My reception went out briefly because of a local thunderstorm, but the picture was still out of focus when it came back on.
