SURVIVOR 7: PEARL ISLAND
14 Aug, 2003 | Cuz_it_aint_their_money

ARRRGGGHHHHHHH!
AVAST Me Mateys!
Shiver me timbers & Blow Me Down!
All hands on deck!
Heave to & strike the mainsail!
This here's Captain Cuz bringing you scurvy scallywags the latest in Survivor news!
ARRRGGGHHHHHHHH!

Well ping-ees, it’s that time again!
Mark Burnett Productions has once again permitted 16 media whores to ply their trade just to bring us a few hours of blissful enjoyment. So without further ado, here is what your intrepid Captain Cuz has come up with so far.

During the final show of Survivor 6: The Amazon, Jeff Probst provided the following voice over for the first Survivor 7: Pearl Island Promo:

This Fall, 16 new Survivors journey off the coast of Panama, to a land steeped in a bloody history of piracy.

A hidden chain of more than a hundred tropical islands, located in the blue-green waters of Central America. These are the PEARL ISLANDS. It is a place of ancient riches, with a turbulent history of looting and plundering. The ruins of Spanish forts and sunken ships are monuments to a violent and infamous past, where the deeds of pirates like Drake and Morgan are legendary.

In these Panamanian waters lurk some of the most exotic and dangerous marine animals anywhere in the Pacific Ocean. Schools of sharks, sting rays, dolphins and sea turtles thrive in a spectacular world beneath the sea.

And our Survivors will begin their adventure during the migration of the humpback whale. For the first time, each tribe will have its own island and the marooning will be unlike anything experienced by the previous Survivors.

Who will outwit, outplay and outlast all the others to become the sole Survivor? Find out this Fall as the adventure continues in the Pearl Islands.

Well, you just knew that with all the Survivor Junkies out there in Webland, it wouldn’t be long before someone came up with some pictures about the Pearl Islands, and here are a few I have selected from the many out there in cyberspace: Photos courtesy of claycritters.com

.

Here is a brief “History of the Pearl Islands” – (an excerpt from SurvivorFever.net)
These islands have a long history as they were the first islands to be explored by Spanish Conquistadors. In fact the most famous conquistador and the person who gave the Pacific Ocean its name, Balboa, lived on these islands after having crossed the Panamanian Isthmus. He chose the islands because the weather was cooler and the mosquitoes non-existent.

After Balboa left, the islands were a center for pearl divers and the greatest of pearls, La Peregrina was found off their shores.

La Peregrina was given to Queen Mary Tudor by Philip the II of Spain in 1554; later the pearl ended up in the hands of Napoleon the III and today Elizabeth Taylor has the pearl in her possession. Richard Burton gave it to her as a Valentine's Day gift in 1969. Who knows maybe there are more such pearls to be found? In the 20th century the Pearl islands, especially Contadora were developed into vacation spots for Latin Americans and Europeans.

.

Well intrepid ping-ees, that’s just about all Captain Cuz has for now.
The show will debut Thursday, September 18th, 2003 at 8 PM EDT.
And hopefully, the official Survivor Website will list the contestants sometime next week.
If so, I’ll be back next Thursday with the bios of the players.

Until then, feel free to post your own spoilers!
And remember, don’t take any wooden doubloons! Har Har Har!

P.S. Remember to Freepmail me if you want on or off the Survivor Ping List.

thanks for your excellent work on this thread all year, I've read them all and enjoyed them. Keep me on the list for the next one if you choose to do it. Have they announced details on the All-Star season, I thought I saw them somewhere (probably one of your posts)...

Pretty happy about Sandra winning. Lil did not deserve 2nd place. She was pathetic during the questioning and I loved Rino's first question about her being out of the game for 10 days while Sandra lasted. Haven't seen the reunion show yet, we went to bed last night and taped it. See you all in February for the all-star show. Thanks for everything Cuz!

Wow that was a shocker Lil in the finals. Her missing days as an "exile" and returning bothered me. Her final opponent had been a survivor more total days. So when the final vote was tallied I felt ok that the real Survivor won.

At least the judges brought up that point.

It was fun seeing Rupert again. He is totally loved by the public. Big ole teddy bear.

Gonna be some tired people stumbling around today! :o)

I wonder if Burton realises he made a mistake by not taking Lill to the final two....

They should put Lil in with Saddam, after 20 minutes he will tell everything, just to get away from that witch.

LOL good observation. I don't know if the Scouts appreciate Lil doing them such odd favors on a reality show!

She would probably weaken Hussein more than all the interrogators the Pentagon can throw at him...haha

Then put him in with Jon, and maybe he can lie some more and trick Saddam into thinking he'll get him out of jail. "I swear on my dead Grandma that I'll get you out of here."

I think Burton was right in wanting to be in the final 2 with John, he probably would've beat him. His big blunder was in taking John on that reward and leaving the women alone.
Does anyone know where survivor all stars was shot, and who is in it???

I didn't find your thread back here hiding in chat until the last few episodes. You did a great job hosting. If you're going to do a thread for the All Stars, please add me to your ping list.

Go, Rupert!

S8 was filmed in the Pearl Islands.

From Survivorupdates.com:

Earlier this week, USA Today reported that the all-star edition will feature players from the first seven editions of "Survivor" with 18 contestants instead of the usual 16. It also reported there would be 14 episodes instead of the usual 13, and that the first contestant voted out would receive $25,000, 10 times what is normally paid in other editions.

As for the players, Burnett would only say he was casting for the "most memorable characters" of the previous "Survivor" shows. Although Burnett and the network are tight-lipped about the all-star edition, several "Survivor" Web sites, such as SurvivorNews.net and others, have listed possible players.

Among the ones reported to be taking part are previous winners Richard Hatch, Tina Wesson, Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca.

Other favorites believed to be back include Rudy Boesch and Susan Hawk from the original show, Amber Brkick, Alicia Calaway and Colby Donaldson from Australia and "Big Tom" Buchanan from Africa.

Here's a list of the reported all-star players by their previous appearances:

"Survivor" -- Hatch, Boesch, Hawk and Jenna Lewis

"Survivor: The Australian Outback" -- Wesson, Brkich, Calaway, Donaldson and Jerri Manthey.

"Survivor: Africa" -- Zohn, Buchanan and Lex Van den Berghe.

"Survivor: Marquesas" -- Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien and Rob Mariano.

"Survivor: Thailand" -- Shi Ann Huang.

"Survivor: The Amazon" -- Morasca and Rob Cesternino.

"Survivor: Pearl Islands" -- Boneham.

THE FOLLOWING IS A RECAP OF THE FINAL SURVIVOR: PEARL ISLAND SHOW!
IF YOU HAVN’T SEEN THE SHOW YET,

your not the Survivor Phreek you think you are!

TURN BACK NOW!
! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING!
! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

OK, DON’T NOBODY SAY I DIDN’T WARN YA!

.

.

.

.

. The final four are awakened early by Jeff with breakfast and champagne. After toasting each other for making it to the final four, Jeff plays with their emotions yet again by delivering letters from home for each of them. Darrah sniffles, Sandra weeps, Lillian bawls and Jonny Jackass (Having killed off all his relatives during the game and therefore has nothing new to get emotional about) proceeds to badmouth the ladies (not to their faces of course) for letting their emotions get the better of them.

As the only man remaining (and even that is debatable) Jonny Jackass proceeds to try to drive a wedge into the women’s alliance. First working on Darrah, saying that it would be strategically smarter for her to vote out Lillian then himself, since in a Darrah – Lillian final two Lillian would have most of the Jury on her side. This causes a rift between Lillian and Darrah. Jonny Jackass then proceeds to work on Lillian to vote against Darrah since she has won the last three Immunity Challenges. Lillian then convinces Sandra that it is indeed time for Darrah to go. Chalk one up for Jonny Jackass who comments: "Whenever you're in the hot seat and someone's ready to vote you off, create tension between two other people and those two people's heads are on the chopping block."

The Immunity Challenge was held at Tribal Council that night and Jeff explained that not only could each of the final four win Immunity, but the Jury could also win Immunity as well, thereby, preventing all four from having Immunity. The challenge would be a question and answer session about survival and pirate folklore knowledge. The Jury wins immunity and Darrah is booted. Her parting comments say it all: "It's pretty bad when people think you're a physical threat when you weigh about sixty pounds soaking wet."

Back at camp, it’s midnight and Sandra retrieves the “SEA mail”. They are instructed to meet at Shipwreck beach at sunrise. Once there, Jeff explains that they are to partake in the “Fallen Castaways” ceremony. They are to take the torches of the booted Castaways (“with the exception of the one who didn’t complete the game…His torch will remain at Tribal council.” scene cut to Osten’s torch still laying on the ground) and one by one place them on the shipwreck and say a few words in remembrance. The three do as instructed and both Lillian and Sandra find a few kind words to say about them. Jonny Jackass however, can only make his typical asinine smartass comments. They finish and the final three shoot muskets onto the wreck, setting it on fire (with the help of a few hundred gallons of gasoline the production crew has hidden below decks) and watch as it burns to the ground in a blaze of glory.

The Three then paddle to their final Immunity Challenge. Jeff explains that they would compete in a test of endurance. They would balance on small floating rafts, allowing only their hands and feet to touch the raft. If any other part of their bodies touch the raft, they are eliminated. The last one left would win Immunity and be guaranteed a spot in the final two. Jeff says go and after about fifteen minutes Sandra losses her balance, leaving Lillian and Jon to battle it out. After about another two hours, Jon’s legs give out on him and he hands Lillian her first Immunity win.

Knowing full well that Lillian held their fate in her hands, Jon and Sandra both tried to plead their cases for the other final two spot. At one point Lillian said enough and didn’t want to hear another word for either of them. At Tribal Council that night, Lillian decided on the lesser of two evils and sends Jonny Jackass packing. The final two are Lillian and Sandra. Jon’s final words reveal his strategy for the entire game. "I'm pretty proud of myself. I never gave up, and I didn't play fair, and I didn't plan on it." And for making a complete jackass of yourself, you still win $75,000 for third place. Yeah, that’s really something to be proud of!

Sandra and Lillian spend a final night back at camp, each trying to figure out how to plead their case for the title of Sole Survivor and the million-dollar prize. In a departure from previous Survivor shows, the two leave the camp completely intact as they head out to their final Tribal Council.

After all this buildup to “an emotional and inflammatory” Jury inquisition, the final Tribal was actually quite tame. Yes the Jury questioned Lillian about her lying and backstabbing while hiding behind her Scout uniform. But there was none of the “venom” in their questions that we were lead to believe would be there. Al-la-Sue Hawk. All in all, I think that the Jury was warned from the get go, not to dwell on Lillian’s role as outcast. This was after all, a Mark Burnett twist and heaven forbid if anything negative should be said about a decision that came down from the high and mighty Mr. Burnett. The Jury votes and the only two votes we are shown are Rupert’s vote for Sandra and Tijuana’s vote for Lillian. Although it should be pointed out that the only reason Tijuana voted for Lillian was because she didn’t get to know Sandra all that well. Jeff then takes the voting urn and announces that the votes will be revealed live, at the reunion show. He then walks down the steps of the Tribal Council ruins and onto the sound stage of the CBS studios in LA.

The votes are read and Sandra Diaz-Twine, the 29 year old wife and mother of two is declared the winner of Survivor: Pearl Island with a vote of 6 to 1.

Well folks, it’s been a pleasure to converse with you and provide my small contribution to this thread.
Thank you again and here’s wishing each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful and prosperous New Year.

I’ll be back next month (when the cast of All Star Survivor is officially announced on January 11th ) with my insightful picks and commentary.

Remember, the All Star Survivor kicks off on February 1st, directly after the Super Bowl!

So, until then,
keep warm,
keep safe and
DON’T TAKE ANY WOODEN DUBBLOONS! HAR! HAR! HAR!

P.S. Freeper lonevoice, you have been added to the Survivor ping list. Welcome aboard!

An excellent job, Cuz, as always..and, 'for I forget, a joyous Holiday to you and yours, as well.....nopw, for the unresolved questions:

1.which of the female survivors will receive an offer to pose for Playboy?...Darrah, Yep! Crista, Yep! Lil??....Thanks Ken! Now I have to scrape my eyeballs to get that image out of my head! I owe you for that one!

2. will the winner, Sandra, sign with Goya Foods? More importantly, will Lillian sign with the Menopause and Depends people?

3. which Dem candidate will Johnny Rotten endorse? You can bet it won't be Hitlery or Carol Mosley-Braun!

So long for now, Cuz, and thanks for keeping this thread going in such spectacular, full-color style.

The ending of this Survivor was quite blah. I wish Lil had garnered a few more of the final votes to make it a closer call. She didn't have to bring popular Sandra with her; I had to believe that she was sincere about Sandra being a "better person" than the odious one, whom she would have beaten for the bucks.

Lil was a funny, strange, not-very-bright little character who scrapped with the best of them. I don't like the jury for sanctimoniously attacking her for her Scout uniform and affiliation, nor for "not representing" scout rules. Poppycock! However, I would probably have voted for Sandra because Lil diid not, after all, survive as many days on the island as S did.

Looking forward to the All-Star game. Any idea where it will be held?

Thanks again for holding this thread together, Cuz! Bravo and a standing O for you.
