In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

surmise \sur*myze\, verb, transitive/intransitive; noun

1. To infer (something) without sufficiently conclusive evidence
2. To make a guess or conjecture

It wafted nearer yet, and then she knew That what before she but surmised, was true. --Dryden.

"If you're a socialist at 20 you have no brain and if you're a socialist at 40 you still have no brain."

So does that mean I have a brain because I've been a conservative at 20 and 40?

"That poor man had quite a traumatic death. No wonder he wasn't always nice. "

yeah, we were told it was a very horrific bloodbath when he was killed. they found him in his car on the side of the road, so the story goes. his wife was at home waiting for him.

"I could be wrong, but I don't think otherworldly things can harm you other than scare you to death."

Well, one that my aunt had in TN use to throw knives at her... she slept MANY nights in her car before finally selling the house. She thought it was so neat to have a haunted house that she would leave it presents.. it seemed that the more attention she paid to it, the worse it got.

I knew that St. Michel SurMise would have great food just from reading the travel brochure.

Or was that St. Michel sur Mer? After that much wine it all goes blurry. The food was good.

No, Miss Slip. The logic on that does not follow.

But being a conservative at 20 and 40 does mean you have a brain.

Argh, mais bien sûr.

Eala, What's up? The lovely and talented LibreOuMort didn't reply to my posting in French? Sacre Blue Law!

Are you guys all right? You haven't been smoking Gauloises have you? Those things will kill you and make everyone around you wish they were dead.

That's a damn shame, considering that even illegal aliens in California can get a literary license without a test.

LibreOuMort doesn't log into FR very often. She often doesn't get much past checking the e-mail (there's so much of it).

Right now we're trying to figure out who persuade to run as the Republican gubernatorial candidate of this benighted state. (As if we really had that kind of influence, but it's never stopped us before.) Another potential candidate backed out this afternoon, leaving us with one -- who'd be superb, but he won't take the final step and commit. Smoking Gauloises? Argh! (Nope, sorry, Argh, I mean Arrrrgh!) We'll be smoking worse than that if we can't get a decent candidate!
