Word For The Day, Friday, August 8, 2003

Posted on 08/08/2003 5:11:44 AM PDT by RikaStrom

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

pandemian \pan*dem*ee*an\, adjective
pandemianly; adverb
pandemiousness; noun

1. Vulgar
2. Sensual

The characteristics of Aphrodite have bewildered philosophers who, like Plato, made a distinction between the two aspects of the goddess, one Uranian "celestial," as the goddess of pure love, and Pandemian, or "popular," as the goddess presiding over ordinary love affairs.

Etymology: I couldn’t find the etymology, double grades to the student who brings it to class!

The ambiguously gay duo comes to mind.

Here's a try:

Pan: Involving all of or the union of a specified group: Pan-Hellenic.

Demos: The common people; the populace or the common people of an ancient Greek state.

So Aphrodite Panwhateverthehellitis might be the goddess of love or eroticism for all the people? Jeez, it's all Greek to me.

Jean said "Pirates" of the "French"(?) Carribean (?) was very good.

She saw it with Tom while he was on leave, claimed they liked the humor, but I'd be criticizing the sea action and navigation and tactics and sails and boats and cannons and yards and booms and ropes and islands ....

Which I probably would. 8<) Heck I do that in every movie.

I'm a little concerned about taking young ones to see it and have already explained that they appear as skeletons at night. My son will probably love it and the little one will pretend to.

Mine's in the big empty space between my ears where I'm not likely to lose it. Always planning ahead...

Just made a trek to the library...checked out Stuart Wood's latest Stone Barrington book. It is dedicated to Charlton and Lydia Heston. Stuart rocks!

On the other hand, I checked out a Danielle Steel. What is my morbid curiousity all about? The book will be written on the same formula...middle aged woman wronged by her husband of x # of years. Ends up with better husband. Jeez. I like to see car wrecks too.

I once drank a case of Alzheimer's, but it didn't mix well with the Buffalo wings.

'Co-sleeping' deaths prompt agencies to act This article PISSES me off! These jerks are going to try to start a campaign against cosleeping here in Athens, which is none of their business. They are using as an example a 4mth old who died while sleeping with a 10 year old boy! What moron lets a 4mth old sleep with a 10y old?? That is hardly a reason to tell parents not to cosleep with their kids. More babies die from SIDS in cribs than in bed with their mother. They are just going to skew the facts so they can tell people what to do. I've got a stupid DFACS lady living next door to me now so now I've got to worry about either me or hubby mentioning that the baby sleeps with us in front of her. /venting

Butt, then again, he's probably not interested in stretching his mind to new ideas.
