The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…
Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
The Road Goes Ever On
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Can't wait to see it!!
Have figured out that the blasted smilie page I reference is the thing that keeps locking the computer up.
Hair, will it be too much Texas to send Frodo to me? I mean, I am of the opinion one can NEVER have too much Texas, but thats just my bias talking.

I have the live shot ready to refresh. I'll check it now and then. Has he caught any fish off that pier?

that's nuthin... I got a good friend that bought his 5 and 3 year-old daughters a quad runner... no governor... no helmet or safety gear... they know only one throttle position... wide open... how come they haven't died in the last year, I dunno... God loves fools and children...I've seen kids like that on dirt bikes. I'd sooner give them a loaded M-60.
My dad was no fool, and figured God would have a little less work to do if he raised his own kids properly. That showed in his approach to teaching firearms safety.
I was about five years old when he'd take me for a short trip through the fields of my grandparents' farm for pheasant hunting. He took two pumpkins from the field, and put them on fence posts. He blasted it to mush with his old Remington autoloader.
Then he helped me hold the gun, and aim it at the second pumpkin. I got to squeeze the trigger, and see the instant pie-filling. He then said, "your head, or someone else's, would look the same way, although the brains would be grayish and bloody, and not orange." Then he had me clean up the mess, and dump it in the ditch.
He had very effective methods of getting the important stuff taught right, the first time.

Good morning! MAN is it hot and muggy here...Down here in MA too, Rosie! I've had the A/C on the last few days, not necessarily for the cooling, but just to remove the humidity. At the least, if the air were MOVING it would feel cooler!

Sigh...
No air conditioning here at work. No windows in my office. No moving air.
But thunderstorms are heading this way. I imagine it'll cool down quickly when those start to hit.

You remember fishhawk. He posted this last night at that other site. It keeps rolling around in my little head. I think it is so exceptional. Thought I would post it here. Hope he doesn't mind.
THE ESCAPE
sleep oft' caught me in its verge
drows'd between the myth and dream
like the tide at evening's surge
or the whispers of a stream
trapped again in space and time
like a cloud 'tween sky and sod
heaven is a hope sublime
reality a lightning rod
give me dreams of peace and love
leave life's lust to those too proud
and I'll be happy high above
content to be this little cloud.

Rosie, you got freepmail.
The rest of you, I will catch up after my meetin'.
Pray for me, I have to behave well.

I am of the opinion one can NEVER have too much Texas, I'm a believer.
Many years ago I read a Sci Fi book in which the Free Republic of Texas was the last stronghold of freedom in a world overtaken by nasty aliens. I never understood the bravado or the swagger of Texans, so I really never got into the book.
When Dubya was once asked what the difference between him and his father was, he looked shocked and replied, "I'm a Texan" in that wonderful droll tone of his.
After watching Dubya these short years, I'm beginning to understand what "I'm a Texan" means. I suspect that many of our enemy are beginning to understand, too.

Under pants play havoc on autobahn
July 23, 2003 Berlin - An unusual flying object caused an accident on one of Germany's notoriously speedy autobahns.
According to police, a pair of flying underpants landed on a driver's face and blocked his view on a highway.
A police spokesperson in the central town of Gotha said one of a group of naked men in a van threw the underwear into a Volkswagen Passat as they passed it on a busy stretch of the highway.
"The underpants landed on the driver's face, causing him to ram the truck ahead from behind," the spokesperson said.
He did not know why the men were driving along naked.
No one was hurt in the crash, but police are trying to track down the owner of the underpants for failing to stop at the scene. - Reuters

Good morning and ping to my above post at 796!
Since you showed up on a third day in a row, perhaps it is time to tell you how crazy we are! I wanted you to see the first Hobbit Hole Webcam event. When and ~if~ Corin shows up on the pier, I will grab screen caps and save them so it is acceptable if you are at ~ahem~ work, and can't monitor all morning.
This is all stemming from our "Adventures of Flat Frodo" project. Earlier in the year Ruthy sent me a cardboard Frodo standee, and I love him dearly, but one day probably after too much drinking, we came up with this idea that it would be fun to take Frodo places and photograph him in surprising settings. Of course, that led to sending him all over the country to different HH dwellers, and with ecurbh's help.... We have the website where we keep the journal.
The Hobbit Hole : There And Back Again, The adventures of Flat Frodo
My favorite shot to date:
Corin has him now and came up with the idea of getting some shots with the webcam.
(anyone else watching who can also save some images - this would be a help and a failsafe backup just in case I screw up!)

And God willing and the crik don' rise, it will stay that way! I am glad for the rest of the country that Texas has produced someone like GW...we had such a bad rep after LBJ. I would have hated Texas too, with the arrogance that LBJ had towards his own country. GW has redeemed us several times over.
I also find it amusing that a lot of British like to sneer at the wild cowboy ways of Bush, but they are totally fascinated by Texans. Just watch "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and listen to Chris Rhea's song "Going to Texas." Was told by a native Brit that Chris Rhea had never been to Texas, yet the song is written in such a way as to make you think he knew it like the back of his hand.

Congradulations on the new home! My wife and I, despite our advanced age of 35, have yet to become home owners and probably won't for at least another year. There is a possibility we'll be moving out West again in the Spring, so we've postponed our nacent plans of buying in NH.
We're homeschoolers as well, so let me know if you have questions or need encouragement. Overcoming family resistence was perhaps the single biggest hurdle. But our 3 boys, I'm proud to say, have never seen the inside of a school classroom.
I'd enjoy an M&C thread, although likely wouldn't have time to post regularly as I'm up to my eyeballs in work between my job and launching my freelance writing and editing business.
Speaking of which, wish me luck on my next article. I've been asked to right a cover story on Christian faith and marriage for a national Orthodox Christian magazine. I got the assignment on Friday and need to have my first page and outline done by tomorrow. Eek! :-)
