Is there a program that will seek and destroy an existing virus?

How could one perform a self test on their pc running Win2k with Norton antivirus installed (at least it says Norton antivirus on the start up screen). I cannot seem to get the Norton program to show up so I can check it. Could I download a 'free' program that could scan my pc and check for and possibly eradicate a potential virus lurking in the system?!?

This is TrendMicro maker of PC-cillin I update it all the time. Go to the site and you can get a free scan on the web.
You can also download it I think and use it.
It comes with all ASUS motherboards.

Anti Vir
http://www.free-av.com/ is free.
AVG at
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php was free but no longer seems to offer a free version. It may be available but a quick look makes it seem like only (the pay-for) version 7 is now available from their site. The free version (version 6) may still be on somwhere like Download.com.
