Interested in becoming EMT
Posted on 07/20/2003 9:33:59 PM PDT by sdk7x7
Fellow FReepers... I'm looking for some info here. I'm going to be 18 soon and, next summer, I'd like to serve as a voluteer EMT with the local ambulance corps. (After 9/11 I became very dedicated to the notion of helping others, specifically in emergency situations.) If there's anyone with general info on the TRAINING to become an EMT (basic level) or, more specifically, an EMT in New York state, please reply to me.
I basically want to know how the courses are broken down (they're provided by the ambulance corps I think)... are they done once a week? Twice a week? For how many hours and weeks?
Thanks for the help.

I became an EMT right out of highschool myself. Of course that was like 13 years ago. However, I took a 3 month course at the local communtiy college. I suggest that be your first place to look.

I also became a EMT and the course was 2 days a week for 3 months PLUS I had to observe in the ER for 3 days at the end of the course. All has changed though. When I graduated in 1998 they wanted to give EMT more responsibilities, like starting IV's.
The thing I did not like is a short 3 month training and starting IV's do not hit it off with me! They should leave it with the Paramedics who have 9 months training.
You may want to consider becoming a paramedic!
I am now a Police and Fire Dispatcher. I really like it but then, I work in a great place. Dispatch is usually on the job training.
Good Luck to you!
