Interesting Interviews Identifying that "Right Potential Candidate" Today I had the opportunity to represent some National Medical Companies that were looking for Top Sales Professionals for nationwide opportunities. As a Professsional Recruiter for over 15 years I have seen plenty of unreasonable requests by companies that are looking for ideal candidates, but today kinda took the cake. Well let me tell you discrimination is alive and well in America. Companies that are highly respected in the Unites States are requesting there "Ideal Job Seeker" to be between the ages of 23 and 28, College degreed of course very polished, nice looking, dressed well, great communications skills, job stability, money motivated and easy to get along with...Okay that does sound like an ideal person, but I asked what if someone is qualified over 35 with most of the requirements your looking for? would you consider them? the answer was atonishing..answer "NO- NO ONE OVER 35 THEY USUALLY HAVE ISSUES COMPLAIN, WHINE AND DO NOT HAVE THERE PRIORITES TOGETHER...AND OVER 40 FORGET IT! THOSE CANDIDATES TEND TO BE BURN-OUTS LAZY WANT MONEY BUT NOT INTERESTED IN REALLY WORKING HARD TO GET IT "WHAT"!! 50 AND ABOVE OH HELL NO! NEVER MADE IT IN LIFE AND WHY BOTHER.... NOW! Well I did interview over 100 candidates today and yes most were between 23 and 28 and quite a few fit there profiles, but then there were a few that were over 35 and had the most important qualifications they were looking for, I was to pick the best 10 candidates today to submit for 2nd interviews so I picked 3 people in there 20's 3 people in there 30's and 3 people in there 40's and for the last one which made the 10th candidate to be interviewed was a man that had more experience, wisdom and commitment than all the 9 candidates put together and he was 70!

I'm a buyer for a mid-sized international chemical company. I've seen as many salesman in my life as most OBGYN's have seen you-know-whats. All things being equal, the well-polished 20-something set is the last people I want to make a contract with. The reason is because most are hiding a bunch of bull**** behind all that polish.

I'd much rather trust a 40 or 50 something person who has a track record of delivering on what was promised. And if he or she is genuine but not up to the polished sales bull****, I count it as a plus.

Being able to write with paragraphs should help any job applicant too.

These were pre-screen interviews and each interview went about 5 to 10 minutes

Well, I'm 47, was an at-will employee in senior management, got the axe by a new exec director in late January. Have applied for hundreds of jobs since then and sent out over 1,000 resumes. Got a couple of first interviews. Nothing more than that.

This seems a little extreme. But even with 23 years of experience and the willingness to take a 1/3 paycut (hey, I need medical insurance like everyone else), I am apparently unemployable. So who knows, maybe things are as extreme as this article claims.

From my experience you need to keep calling and emailing a company that your interested in, make yourself known by the HR people and managers if possible, follow up with Thank You cards and research the comapny that you want to work for so that they know how much your interested.

A strong work ethic and perseverance I feel is what really is going to get someone a job, the Healthcare Sales Industry is just so competitive right now due to that Industry being recession proof.

Yeah...I do all that (I even took a $3,000 career counselling program). I make about 4-6 applications a day, and do regular follow-up daily. I just think that I don't have anything that anyone wants at this time...too much of a generalist, when everyone is looking for a specific fit...and can get it in this market.

Work with Professional Recruiters also they can be of some great assistance sometimes as they market you to the companies they work with.

That'd be 10 per hour...or one every 6 minutes....assuming 0 bathroom breaks and breaks for food/drink.

good point!
