Temper-Pedic Mattress Questions (Need Help)

Posted on 05/21/2003 12:52:38 PM PDT by Mpatl

Do any Freepers have advice on a new mattress? It's worst than buying a used car. I like the Tempur-Pedic, but it's a little expensive. Any reviews or remarks would be appreciated!

Go buy yourself a Select Comfort. I know they're expensive, but I promise they are worth every dollar. Especially if you have back or joint problems. Don't skimp on a bed it's too important. Go test one and you'll be sold. I was.

'dont skimp on a bed'. I agree, you'll be sleeping on it a long time. Skimping is what where it out prematurely.

Thanks. We tried one at the mall, but I wasn't thrilled with it. It might have been the over-zealous salesperson that was bothering me. Have you had any keeping the air pressure level during the night?
I'll go back and give it a try.

Don't buy an air mattress(select comfort and others) unlike a water bed, when an air mattress developes a leak(and it will) you cannot easily find the leak to make repairs. I have a TempurPedic and it is expensive and heavy but we got it for my wife. She has bone cancer and it is the only thing she can sleep on. It is very comfortable and the top surface does indeed mold itself to you as a result of your body heat (hence the name, TempurPedic)

You will want help moving it and installing it. We got the king size and the mattress alone weighs 80-100lbs or so.

Also consider Sterns Foster. None of the new technology some like to talk about but a great, sturdy, solid bed.

I learned online the the TempurPedic is very clammy - the material does not breathe and you sink down into it and sweat.

That changed my mind.

I was considering a Select Comfort or Nautilus air mattress, but I bought a $40 King Size Coleman air mattress from Wal-Mart as a temporary solution and slapped it on our box springs. It is so comfortable that my wife and I decided to stick with it. Just put a thick comforter on top of it and cover it with a fitted sheet and it is great.

Even though it only cost $40, I don't think the fancier mattresses would give you a better night's sleep.

Air mattresses are incredibly comfortable.

My wife and I bought a and we are very pleased with it.

Why that model? I asked the Mattress salesman what he slept on at home. Then I asked the two salesgirls working with him. The world is full of brands, and they were all sleeping on Kingsdowns.

It helped that the matresses are very comfortable, and we got a Queen Set on sale for about $1600, 0 down, 0% interest for 6 months.

This Coleman mattress has lasted 4 years so far with no problems, but you could buy a new $40 mattress every year and be money ahead of the fancy ones.

We bought a Schiffman recently, replacing a Stearns & Foster we'd had for 15 years or so. Very comfortable, but rather expensive. My wife, who is the expert on these matters, tells me Shiffman is the very highest quality conventional mattress available. I must say it was significantly more comfortable than the alternative Stearns & Foster models we tried. Stearns & Foster has a new type of box spring system which looked interesting, but was definitely not as comfortable as our old one had been.

We also tried the Dux bed, which friends who have back trouble swear by. It was very comfortable for me, but the wife (who has a bad back) did not like it as well as the Schiffman. It was also almost twice as expensive as the Schiffman, so we passed.

Thanks. We did, but couldn't come to a consensus. You know, too soft or too hard, etc...

Very interesting. May I ask about your online source for the clammy claim? I'm trying my best to make an informed decision. Thanks for your help.
