Mac site makes all out attack on... Apple
Online music crap, servers poor, PCs better
By INQUIRER staff: Monday 12 May 2003, 15:02
A COLUMN on dedicated Mac site Macnet has launched an all out diatribe against Apple, Steve Jobs, and nearly all of their work and pomps. The column kicks off by claiming that Apple's music service creates "practically worthless files" compared to the real thing on CD.
AAC encoded with DRM "is a mistake", the site claims.
It continues by saying that Jobs' decision to stick with Motorola chips meant Apple got burned in the process, while "no one believes Apple's computers are faster or equal to PCs anymore".
And, the diatribe goes on to say that Apple's desktop machines are "ridiculously slower than PCs and much more expensive". People would rather buy Dells instead.
The Apple OS X operating system is "slower than any other OS out there including Lindows" and Microsoft "has already won".
Apple's customer service is "unbalanced and juvenile" and you're "treated like a criminal".
The music scene it launched will "not save Apple", the column continued.
The same site last week accused Apple of revealing confidential information and wilfully damaging a 17-inch notebook sent back to the company for repair.
It's not balanced, but it's definitely worth reading.
I have owned several Macs and found them for the uses to which I put them, to be excellent machines. I have but two complaints:
1. I'm a gamer. "First Person Shoooters" to be exact. PC games are cheap but I haven't seen a similar game for mac that runs less than $50 for a new game. (Anybody got a good source for online games to buy? I'm running OS 9.2)
2. When I send pics over my e-mail (aol) nobody with a PC can seem to open my attachments. This is maddening!
Finally, you will have noticed that I'm on OS 9.2 This is because I can't figure out how 10 works even though my current iMac came with 10.1.1 as well. I quickly switched my startup disk to 9.2 because I'm familiar with it. Unfortunately, it seems as if the OS 10 and subsequent interations are here to stay and even my beloved games are now moving in that direction. I'm going to HAVE to learn the system....or be left behind. To be sure there seem to be some really KEWL games out there that are OS 10 (Jaguar 10.2.2) compatible like SOF II Double Helix. I guess that once school is out in a few weeks, I'll get the Jaguar software and make the switch. I'll have to reinstall everything I had on the OS 9 side....but that's the price I must pay.
Now thats worth dumping Apple for..........
It will be interesting to see if they put him in any ads.
Here is a possible solution - if your picture files do not have the ".jpg" or other appropriate file name extension, try adding that before sending them in e-mail.
Should be a PC format setting somewhere - certainly is if you're scanning using Photoshop. The problem is Macs can read PC, but not vice-versa (MS business model).
It could also be the encoding of attachements set by your emailer. Needs to be "Apple Double" for the PC to read it - same prob again.
Or it could be AOL, which lives in its own world. Let me be the 100th to tell you to dump it and get a real ISP.
Oh I know...I KNOW! And I happen to agree with you...my pics all have the jpg added to them and a funny little "sit" also added and I think THIS is an aol mechanism that is screwing up the works! But it is just such a hassle to do this!
Al Gore has spent the better part of his life actively hostile to the Bill of Rights and Constitution. Therefore, a US citizen is legally and morally, as a matter of law and creed, forbidden from honoring Gore. The folks in Cupertino have always had a statist bent, but Al Gore! Sorry, Apple, that will do it for me.
Don't mean to further confuse, but sit appended usually means "self-extracting."
It's used for compressed (zipped) files, and means you don't need WinZip, or other compress/expand program, to de-compress it - it's "self" extracting (by double clicking the file.) Unfortunately, you need to indicate whether the self-extracting is for Windows or Mac.
Now, picture files don't compress much - not much advantage in using zip-type apps. And jpeg should be cross-platform, not problem, no need to indicate Mac or PC format.
You may be able to find a preference in AOl that allows you 1) not to compress and/or indicate Windows Self Extracting; plus, 2) Encode attachments Double Apple; I suspect somewhere in here may be your problem.
Or you could ask AOL for fun.
I work on a Mac, most of my clients are PC users, and I'm able to exchange all manner of files without problems; it is possible once you get the settings right (caveat for AOL); it took me a while to figure out, so I wouldn't give up yet.
Good luck.
The OS 10 installer will handle moving the old stuff for you. I've upgraded 2 computers to it.
Only thing I'd recommend is a back-up. Always a good idea before any major change.
I enjoyed getting to vote against Al Gore again
.sea means self extracting, with .sit files you need a copy of Stuffit Expander.

Jean Louisse Gasse - a Frenchie!
Don't know, but it's possible the OS x version of AOL will pick up the old settings during install.
Will the OS 10 installer also move the settings for aol?
Don't know, but it's possible the OS x version of AOL will pick up the old settings during install.
If you have a prior version of AOL on your system, the AOL-for-OS-X installer will pick up your prior settings.
YUP! Worked EXACTLY as you said it would! I love it. Thanks, everybody.
