Our Texas Locale page recently got very busy on the unusual topic of Ouija boards and such. Archy suggested a Lone Star Thread That Will Not Die. Like those darn Hobbit threads with 30,000+ posts.
This is not my thread and I'm not going to baby sit it every day. I just gathered the kindling and y'all have to start the fire.
TOPICS: Chit/Chat

One of the first things I told my sis when she was in intensive care was that I had a lot of friends who would love to pray for her if she didn't mind them knowing about her illness.
Her response was:
"I need all the prayers I can get. I just don't want a bunch of blubbering and crying."
That was so typical of her.
Thank you all for your prayers and support.

Texas needs a complete over haul on long term care. One of the reasons the cost is so high is because of all the states unrealistic regulations. After you get thru with the financial nightmare I can reassure you though, that most nursing facilities (homes) provide excellent care. I work at one at it's not home but it is the next best thing and the residents and staff become kind of like extended family. If you ever have any concerns though you can freep mail me and I can share some things to watch for.
To: CindyDawg
Thank you, CindyD.
It's nice to have reassurance from someone who knows.
My daughter worked at a nursing home in San Angelo, and she loved every minute of it. Her MS forced her to quit.
She said the same things you're saying.
I talked with the social workers in three homes in San Antonio and toured the facilities. I was impressed with the genuine compassion and love shown by the nurses and nursing home staff toward the patients.
My hat's off to you, Cindy, and to all of the people who work in a nursing home.
It takes a special breed of people with God's love in their hearts.
When the social worker and I started filling out the paper work to get my sis in the home which I had selected, I assumed that the big, thick folder had many forms of the same type.
Wrong!
We filled out each paper in that folder! It took almost two hours to complete the paperwork!
She said the paperwork mounted daily.
I agree that this is what drives up the cost - endless bureaucratic bullsh*t!

Welllll, for gunner to have my baby would mean that I would have to participate in the conception of aforesaid baby.
Excuse me while I take an hour or two to shudder at the thought!!!!!
LOL!
I know you guys are there, Tom, and it means a whole helluva lot to me.
If there's anything I need help with, I'll call. It's about all done now. We're waiting on God.
Give D. a hug for me.
God bless....
To: TexasCowboy
Thanks for this information, buddy! And prayers coming from the woods for your brave sister.
Don't forget to take good care of yourself during this trying time. Prayers for you as well!

Yes, potlatch. If you have the money it's no problem.
In this particular case I was trying to get her in under Medicare to protect her estate for the memorial fund for kids with cancer.
She doesn't have much, but the interest on her money would sponsor one or two kids with cancer to a summer camp each year.

Hi, Humid, old buddy!
It's really good to see you.
I talked to the hospice nurse before I left San Antonio today, and she said that my sis has from a few days to two weeks to live.
The cancer is in her brain now, so it won't be long.
One item I forgot to mention was that the funeral contract must be irrevocable if it's in the patient's name or it will be classed as an asset.
Thank you for your prayers.
HUGS!!
To: TexasCowboy
I hope I didn't offend you, T.C.! I didn't mean it that way at all. My Mother had cancer and was put in the nursing home under the care of Hospice. She was only there four weeks and my brother took care of all arrangements.
Since she had a good deal of money to leave to us, I was actually puzzled by how it all works after reading your comment. In our case, My brother had 'control' of everything. Regards, Carol

No offense taken, Carol.
I've been back to San Antonio twice since that last post so it took awhile to get back to you.
I am the "brother" who took care of this for you.
I have mixed feelings about this issue.
On the one hand I think everyone should have to pay their own way, even if it takes everything they have at the end of their days.
On the other hand, the setting up of the trust fund was my idea, and I'd so much like for the money to go to the kids with cancer.
I set it up so that there will be no administrative fees like with United Way or March of Dimes.
Every penny will go to the kid(s) that is/are sponsored.
The American Legion will administer it on a volunteer basis.
At any rate, when I left San Antonio today the hospice nurse told me that she only had a few days left so most of the money will go to the trust fund, after all.
This law that is going into effect in Texas is already being done according to Medicare mandates in all but three states.
If the patient's property isn't worth enough to pay for the selling of the property, this law will not apply.
To: TexasCowboy
Prayers to you, T.C., it's always hard to lose someone you love. It sounds like you have done a good job in following your sisters wishes.
