Time to kiss and make up. Be done quickly, please. And leave with hopeful prayers.

Nope. I quoted a scripture for a specific purpose. Make peace. Or else.

After reading about your dental adventures, I will never complain about going to the dentist again. I'm a big wimp when it comes to the dentist.

And I've just gone through my budget, looks like I can get power windows and cruise control in my car. Yippee!!!

Bart did mention that I shouldn't try dentistry at home with the Dremel Tool(tm). Anymore. Ever. Again.

I'm used to my uninformed opinions being referred to as ignorant. I'm not used to me being referred to as ignorant. Big difference.

I was trying to be helpful and rereading my original post was honestly my best attempt. It fell short, I guess. Or maybe someone else didn't want to learn the difference and say, "Oh yeah, you're probably right that what I meant to say was...."

Umm...Guess what? Your 'ignorant' reference is a distinction without a difference. Maybe someone else doesn't give a damn about jazz and resents you telling them that they are 'ignorant' for not feeling the rapture you feel about it. The funny thing is, you probably don't care one whit about ice hockey, yet if I called you 'ignorant' about it, how would you feel? would you make the distinction between your comments or your general outlook upon it?

Laramie... the town that created Madison Avenue. No, really:

Another "Jordan Playboy" ad read,

"Step into the Playboy when the hour grows dull with things grown dead and stale.
Then start for the land of real living with the spirit of the lass who rides, lean and rangy,
into the red horizon of a Wyoming twilight."

The creator of the Jordan car, some salesman who dreamed large dreams, was on the train from Chicago to L.A., passing through Wyoming when he saw a girl riding a horse. He asked where they were. "Laramie."

It was one of the first "lifestyle" ads, from the early 1920s. The "Jordan" car didn't go very far, but it launched an industry. Miller Lite had nothing on the Jordan Playboy.

Mark, come on, nothing I said should be construed as having to do with personal taste or trying to make someone else like that. If I said I don't like wrestling because I don't like chairs thrown about and masked men stomping about, you might want to point out that wrestling and WWF are two very different things. I'd have to own up to being uninformed if all I knew was the WWF I'd seen on TV and didn't know about the real sport. I still may not like either one and you couldn't make me like them, but how could I defend my dislike of wrestling based only on the description of WWF?

Very clever. But can you say p-e-d-a-n-t-i-c????

The whole point of the discussion is that you you thought a certain part of 'culture' worthwhile, while there is a significant portion of the population that does not share your view. You seem to think that those that do not share your view as 'ignorant'. That is fine. But just remember that you and your views do not represent the totality of the American culture or Western culture, for that matter. And snobbery definitely does apply.

While it's silly to argue the relative importance of our rights, I submit to you that the Fifth Amendment's taking clause has held out against socialism more than any other of our rights. It's certainly proven stronger than the 9th and 10th ammendments, and it has not been skewed by the 14th (which was, btw, designed to protect property rights more than any other, but that's a whole other issue...).

In socialist societies, eminent domain is absolute. In our society, it is limited -- and drastically so -- by the requirement to pay for the taking. One of the great advances of the Rehnquist Court is to uphold the Fifth Amendment and apply it to the EPA, HUD, and the host of other leftist/centrist federal inteventions.

Property rights, as I remind my children who remain my property until 18 ("I can't wait until I'm 18," said my daughter tonight when I refused to overrule her mother over not letting her go on a field trip), property is liberty. My daughter will attest to it with vehemence tonight.

I'm glad to see some action on this subject tonight. That's what makes ATRW great.
