Word For The Day, Tuesday, 4/08/03
4/08/03

Posted on 04/08/2003 12:54:28 AM PDT by Bella_Bru

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Do you have a word you'd like to see used? Freepmail me, and if it has not been used in a while, I will add it to our list.

Do you have a birthday coming up? Please FReepmail me with the date and I will make a special birthday thread for you!

eclat\E*clat"\; noun:

1. Great brilliance, as of performance or achievement.
2. Conspicuous success.
3. Great acclamation or applause.

Etymology: French, brilliance, from Old French esclat, splinter, from esclater, to burst out, splinter, probably of Germanic origin.

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with WFTD.

Allow me to be the first on this thread to say I know the Orangemen will be greeted with great eclat upon their return to the 'Cuse. :-)

it was really fantastic, i wish you could have been there too. the SU fans are truly the best. xshub was in his glory at the Marriott mixing it up with his ilk there and meeting the old players like Pearl Washington, Ronnie Sekaly etc. He did not see the second half of last night's game because he was out pacing the Superdome with a bad case of nerves, once Kansas started to make a comeback. We heard that Carmelo and G-mac were out on Bourbon Street last night, with an entourage worthy of the gods....

YOU, grimmy, unlike your Tejano counterpart, Vast, are quite gracious in your accolades. Vast was grudging at best yesterday, so i want to see him eating a big bowl of HUMBLE PIE over the SU win.

so what do you think of jim boeheim's hot little wifey? the old coot did pretty well for himself the second time around.

The perils of live TV:

Post-game interview of Kansas Coach Roy Williams with generic CBS sportschick... the sportschick asked Roy about the possible head coach job offer from N. Carolina....
Roy praised his own players for all their work, told the sportschick that he knew she was ordered to ask that question, but said that it was personally offensive to him that the subject was brought up immediately after the big game.... then, he closed the interview with "I could give a sh!t less about North Carolina right now!"

Kudos to Roy Williams!

I've been away most of the day sweets. Syracuse certainly earned its national title by running through a very tough gauntlet of 0U, UT, and KU. Apparently (I missed the second half) KU was nearly as awful at the foul line as UT. If Thomas from UT had spent as much time practicing his free throws as he spent making his cornrows, he might have given the longhorns a chance to be in the game at the end. It seemed like he must have missed a dozen free throws in the second half, and he was the only one going inside and getting fouled. I was yelling at the coach to send someone else inside instead of him. All SU had to do was foul him and it was the equivalent of a turnover whenever UT came down the floor. But enough complaining about the longhorns; SU outplayed and outcoached them and that's why they're the national champions.

Congratulations.

Our President, NSC, as well as the members of the Coalition, have performed with eclat. The members of the armed forces who are serving in the middle east have also shown eclat in their dealing with the native peoples.

Saddam Hussein hasn't.

That wasn't eclat that Gerry Rivers got from the soldiers.

Staley went on to say, "A handful of troops here wanted pictures with G and autographs. A few shook his hand. Others here wanted to harm him, were disgusted with him, thought he should have been sent home in a Humvee (a 40-hour drive south through the desert).

"We later found out a few who shook his hand had put those hands in unmentionable places prior. Army justice?"
