Gere takes on Bill

Richard Gere stunned fellow liberals Monday by suggesting that President Bush is doing a better job of fighting AIDS than President Bill Clinton did.

Introduced by Sharon Stone at a fund-raiser at Cipriani 42nd Street for the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the "Chicago" star hailed Bush for his State of the Union proposal to contribute $15 billion toward the AIDS battle in Africa and the Caribbean. Gere then addressed the track record of Bush's predecessor in the White House.

"I'm sorry, Sen. [Hillary] Clinton, but your husband did nothing about AIDS for eight years," Gere said.

By that point, Sen. Clinton, who joined Mayor Bloomberg and honorees Anna Wintour and Lorne Michaels at the event, had left the restaurant. But a spokeswoman for the senator said yesterday that Gere's claim was "simply not true. The Clinton administration increased funding for AIDS research, prevention and treatment by over 400% and tripled funding for international AIDS programs."

Meanwhile, veteran Clinton-basher Christopher Hitchens is suggesting that the former President was a CIA informant at Oxford University, where the two were students in the late 1960s.

"I think he was a double," the author of "No One Left to Lie To" claims in the latest issue of the conservative quarterly Doublethink. "Somebody was giving information to [the CIA] about the antiwar draft resisters, and I think it was probably him."

Clinton's spokesman Jim Kennedy declined to comment on Hitchens' spy story.

After living in New York for nearly four years, Habib admits to having spent "most of [his] time in bars or at restaurants."

Kid should do great at Oxford.

I'd like to see the Iron Chefs wearing these. Very interesting item!

Is anyone surprised by China, France or Russia's response? I'm not.

Hitlery at the AMFAR benefit where Richard Gere dissed Blubba's non-record on AIDS. The NY Times described the gala:

SENATOR HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON, who was speaking at the event, wore a dark blue floor-length Oscar de la Renta with a ruffled neck and train. "Well, this is one of my favorite Oscars, and it just seemed appropriate for the event and it was also warm," she said. ... Senator Clinton, in her remarks, praised Dr. Krim and all the honorees: Mr. Michaels for "a keen eye about what's going on in the world"; Ms. Wintour for her bringing to public attention "so many issues that might be overlooked"; Mr. Gere "for being a spokesman for important causes." She said she was very proud of Mr. Gere, "proud of the way he stood for what he believed in, how he spoke out constantly."

Handed him his hanky, then when the little one was done, he stuffed it back in his pocket.

I saw that last night. To me, the cutest thing was the little boy's older sister who was seated between him and their mother. The little boy blew his nose loudly, handed the hanky back to his mom who handed it back to the President. When he took it, and without missing a beat, put it right back in his pocket, the daughter got one of those 'can you believe what he just did'? smiles on her face. It was kind of embarassment for what her brother did in handing the messy handkerchief back, and wonderment at the President taking it back without any hesitation. A wonderful moment.

The triumphant return of Ol' Crusty, lest anyone think Oscar de la Renta replaced it:

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-NY, left, sits with Columba Bush, wife of Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, during a news conference on Capitol Hill to release a study on substance abuse by girls and young women, Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003. Bush's daughter, Noelle Bush, has been undergoing drug treatment since she was arrested in January, 2002, for allegedly trying to use a fraudulent prescription to buy the anti-anxiety drug Xanax at a pharmacy drive-through window in Tallahassee.

Thanks for the link on the " Cloak of Invisibility".

When you look at the practical possibilities it really is a fascinating invention.

Would someone please explain something to me?

WHY, why, why would Sen. Hatch schedule the vote for Mr. Estrada's judgeship for today---when it will get NO coverage?!! Tomorrow's headlines will all have to do with Powell and Nasa.

Congressional Pubbies need a good PR agent. (The understatement of the decade!)

It maybe difficult for the Dems to feign outrage over another rabid right wing judge on the day when even Joe Biden thinks Powell smoked them at the UN.Even milquetoast like Hatch may have figured the Dems would be very conflicted today.

Baby Update!

This time I have good news. The specialist said that it looks like the baby is fighting off the infection. He said that the blood flow in the brain was down. This indicates that his body is producing more red blood cells, so less blood flow is needed to make up for the reduced number of blood cells that the virus destroys. His numbers dropped from 32 to a 22 which is a pretty significant decrease. The doctor said his little body is doing exactly what it is designed to do. It's pretty astounding to me that at 21 weeks, his body "knows" what to do.

He wants to see me again next week for another follow-up, but he was very pleased with the progress that the baby is making. So it looks as though the baby has made it through the worst of the virus without developing hydrops. That was the big worry and that is what could have precipitated the blood transfusion.

Things are looking much better. I can never thank all of you enough for your prayers.

Although I didn't get to see Powell's presentation, I heard it on the radio, and I was amazed at the strength and sense of purpose that he had. Although I wasn't alive in the 60's for the Adalai Stevenson presentation, I got the feeling that this was even more damning and strong than that one.
