The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

PJ put the romance in there because New Line insisted (or so I read)...

In the DVD:SE, Davies says he played Gimli with a Scottish (or Welsh?) brogue.

I've forgotten, is Gimli older than 80 year old Aragorn?

I have seen PJ and Fran and Phillipa interviewed, and their comments on the commentary, and they seemed to have a genuine affection for the romance in the story. I really think they liked it for human reasons, and I cringe at the discussions that it was pandering in some way. I have not heard that was forced.

. Actually, the one thing that stuck out wrong to me was when he called Aragorn "laddie". I do not recall Dwarves using that expression at all.

A Scottish Dwarf?....Do Dwarves play the pipes?

Iguana my mind probably filled in where I knew the answer. However, this really does show that I am in need of another viewing. LOL It would be lovely to get to do that today or tomorrow. I'm off for Christmas break and don't leave town to go home until Saturday. I really should fill my time with something other than having an unruly teenager to deal with.

I liked the joke at the wall... I fell for Legolas (big surprise) when he smiled (he smiles more in this one than the last film!) "Would you like me to describe it to you? - Or shall I get you a box?" HA HA! I could just smack him!

Hi K! I'm with Bear, for many of the same reasons. I've been pretty heavy on the Lott War threads. Definitely the most acrimonious freeping I've had since I quit the Religious Wars. Although the lovely Mrs. Wordsmith, whose insights I often defer to on these issues, was certainly more revolted by Lott's performance on BET than by his performance at Strom's party.

You know, I got the feeling that the Arwen scenes were put in because otherwise she would be a forgotten element when RoTK comes out.

I'd be the first to vote those scenes off in exchange for the Ents sending the trees to Helm's Deep. I would have loved to see madness envelope the Uruk-hai as described in the book.

Honestly though, they were somewhat necessary in that they explained what Arwen is giving up, they showed the future loneliness she would face and the pain of a father becoming second in his daughter's heart to another man. It made Elrond seem a little more human.

Our problem is that we've read the books and all that is common knowledge. We don't need PJ to explain it to us. But, we have to try and remember that not everyone has read Tolkien and PJ has to baby-step them through it as well.

You are a reliable source. PS - If it were forced, do you think that they would admit to it. It would be the same as biting the hand that feeds you.

I think they have done a phenemenal job with it, and I don't believe it has attracted from the story at all.

Thanks for your input Wordsmith. I had forgotten that you, as well as Bear, had a mixed marriage.......you know, a male and a female. ;^)

I cannot remember reading it, but my gut says "yes".

It was only the word "laddie" that seemed out of place to me, not so much his accent. Although, I have to say that I thought Gimli and Treebeard sounded identical. But I think that's because I knew ahead of time that JRD speaks both. Glen had no idea until I told him and didn't think they sounded alike at all.

Of course, if I had proofread my post above, I would have noticed that I should have typed "not distracted from the story at all."

One more comment... I think Liv Tyler is gorgeous, so I don't mind her in the movies. It kept the elves involved, which is a good thing. 'Cause I like the elves.

heh heh... I wouldn't say Rose was "revolted" by his appearance on BET so much as she was amazed... was hard to believe that someone who had reached such a high level in politics could be so politically inept.

I was jarred by the "laddie" thing also. But, it could have been an attempt to show the growing relationship between Aragorn, Legalos, and Gimli. A softening, and a growing intimacy between the three. That's what I thought the jokes were about. It takes great intimacy and knowledge between three guys to joke about height and things. My opinion only!

I'd say the Arwen/Elrond scenes were okay but we can do without the "dream scene" with Aragorn unless people need a potty break.
