The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I think it is interesting how we are split about 50-50 on Faramir. I like how he came out, I too thought he was at first harsh in the book, and why wouldn't he be?

I think he was harsh in the book up until he found out that it was Isildur's Bane that they were dealing with. The book Faramir knew already that Isildur's Bane was dangerous whereas the movie Faramir had to be convinced.

"Hi Kevin!"

LOL! Well, everyone here knows mine (Ruthy), so what's the sense in rehashing?

I can understand the reluctance to share personal information on a public website though. I just got to a point where I figured that anyone that hated me enough would find my name another way anyway so I'd better even out the odds and let my friends know it first!

Oh, back to the movie a sec. You know, when Galdalf and company rides into Edoras, I swear I could see Ian holding on to a saddlehorn under his robes. It was really quick, but since I was concentrating on seeing how he rode Shadowfax at liberty, I caught it.

Did anyone else see that?

What are your thoughts on this Trent Lott thing?

Rose has been replying to some of the discussion threads on the News side. Suffice it to say that we both think he should step down as Majority Leader, before he's voted out.

Just can't support someone who wishes for the election of a man who would have kept our marriage illegal.

Good morning! I didn't like the map either... and just how did Faramir, way off in Ithilien, know what Saruman was up to in Rohan, anway?

but I guess they didn't have the nerve to tell us that the dwarf won!

Obviously yet one more case of anti-dwarf bias.
I also wished that they had put in one of Legolas's best lines
"It's been knifework up here."

hmmmm, I guess so... but I think Gollum has Don Knotts' lips and mouth... especially in the wide area from his nose to his upper lip, there is a strong resemblance I think.

I'm thinking in particularly the whole scene where Aragon goes over the cliff, and the following dream sequence(for lack of a better word) with the elves showing up at Helms Deep. Also if memory serves Fairamir released Frodo Sam and Gollum w/o and doesn't take them to Osgiliath.

With these exceptions I thought it was just wonderful.
And now a question? Is it Dec. 2003 yet?

I did a "Find in Forum" on Rose to check out her thoughts. All I have to say is you are a lucky man.

Not quite sure what Rose did to deserve you though. ;^)

I thought there was another one there that Boromir was talking about at the Council of Elrond around the time when he and Faramir have that dream about Imladris.

Yes, he is in a saddle. Would have to have been for safety. I am going to guess that almost all of the riding was done by a double, and even then I am sure the double was in a saddle. Liberty horses are trained to respond to tiny shifts of weight by the rider and it would be too hard to have the kind of seat necessary to turn and stop the horse bareback. I don't know if the animal they used is really a stallion or not (I haven't been given an intimate look) but he does have the cresty neck, jowls and carriage characteristic of a stallion. Especially if it was a stallion, but even if it wasn't, Ian McKellan is not going to be skillful enough to be put on a horse with no means of control in close contact with other horses. I bet when the "behind the scenes" comes out, we learn that like Liv Tyler, Ian McKellan was never on a moving horse.

That said, Shadowfax was at liberty most of the time. One shot I did see a white line around his neck. Either the mood of the horse required it that day, or what they needed to do was intricate enough that they needed that, I have to see it again to see what else happened in the scene. It was a fleeting glimpse, and I forgot where.

You are right.... I liked part of Arwen's stuff in TTT, but the falling off the cliff, with the dream kiss and kissy scene that followed was a little over the top. And I don't think there was one person in the theater who believed he was dead. They knew a lie when they saw it. ;~D The horse coming to him was really corny too, but I think it was sweet and I forgive it... Was PJ telling us that Arwen actually sent the kiss and the horse to Aragorn? or was it all a vision of Aragorn's, and the horse came for his own reasons? What do you think?

Found it!

`Yet that hour, maybe, is not now far away. The Nameless Enemy has arisen again. Smoke rises once more from Orodruin that we call Mount Doom. The power of the Black Land grows and we are hard beset. When the Enemy returned our folk were driven from Ithilien, our fair domain east of the River, though we kept a foothold there and strength of arms. But this very year, in the days of June, sudden war came upon us out of Mordor, and we were swept away. We were outnumbered, for Mordor has allied itself with the Easterlings and the cruel Haradrim; but it was not by numbers that we were defeated. A power was there that we have not felt before.

`Some said that it could be seen, like a great black horseman, a dark shadow under the moon. Wherever he came a madness filled our foes, but fear fell on our boldest, so that horse and man gave way and fled. Only a remnant of our eastern force came back, destroying the last bridge that still stood amid the ruins of Osgiliath.

'I was in the company that held the bridge, until it was cast down behind us. Four only were saved by swimming: my brother and myself and two others.
