The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Sam: when I post earlier on Yew wood for bows,I mentioned it works easily, I neglected to say that it is easy to work WITH proper safety precautions. The dust from sanding is somewhat toxic itself. Good resperator and ventilation is a must. I know two bowyers that ended up with serious lung infections from breathing the dust. Not everyone is affected to the same degree but it is something to consider if you attempt to make a yew bow.

The two books you might want to read are "Longbow, a social and military history" by Robert Hardy. Excellent history and included information on the bows recovered from the Mary Rose, which was sunk in 1545.

The other is The Heritage of the Longbow by Pip Bickerstaffe, a bowyer who plies his trade in England, a combination history and how to make your bow, arrows, and strings. The fellow on the cover is seen shooting an honest-to-goodness warbow, pulling 160 lbs. Most of us are happy to get 50 lbs.

The former has a wide distribution while the latter has limited circulation. Both are excellent reads.

Evening! I just saw "it" for the fourth time. Better than ever, though the theatre couldn't be bothered to start the movie until 20 minutes after the official time...

Now I'm checking my life before I go to bed.

I will be here tomorrow unless I am writing - 6000 words on the epic so far and it's kinda fun. I worked out some stuff about magic today and I need to think about religions...
