The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Thanks, OT. They're meeting Saturday night, so I have a few days to worry. ;-) In any case I'll get to listen in on their practice, which should be fun in and of itself.

Thanks for the ping and GOOD MORNING!

I'm all riled up, having just finished reading my morning email. We have a "safety officer" who sends out grave safety notices about once a week. The sad/hilarious thing is that most of the time they are urban legends and the remainder are alarmist misreadings of news articles (I might post some examples later). So I, and a couple others, have great fun sending out a follow-up email that corrects the errors in the safety-grams and links up to snopes or zeitgeist where the urban legend parts are debunked. I just have to shake my head that a gov employee gets paid to pass along spam-o-grams....and they call him a safety officer! Ha!

Yes! So if I could convince them I'm even sort of OK enough...well, it'd be a good thing!

Susan got an "inflator", runs off the cigarette lighter, good for the low tire you find in the morning. Both are pretty good to have.

I've got an inflater. That's the reason a cigarette lighter is required on my bike now. Until I was 40 years old I always thought camping with an air mattress was for sissies. Then, I spent a week and a few days 1700 miles from home with only tent and sleeping bag. And WalMart nearby had air mattresses.... and at least that darned mattress got me up off the wet ground! And it rolls up nicely with the tent and ground cover for traveling on the bike. So, for about 4 years now I've really been enjoying that inflator and air mattress.

And my kids are telling me that I'm at the onset of being old. I decided the appropriate reply is "now I'm old enough that I don't have to prove I'm tough.... I can be wise."

Two thoughts:

1) It's Saruman, not Gandalf

2) Images from theonering.net take a long time to load

We saw that little gem a year ago.... and at the time thought that would be Saruman's end. There is a wheel just like that at the foot of Orthanc, visible in the film. One that a wizard could perhaps fall on if they were pushed or fell out of that balcony.

However, the "Wizard-Kabob" photo, as we have named it, has since been half-debunked as a "canary", a deliberate bit of false information to spoil spies. An tursted source was quoted to say "Saruman doesn't die on the spike. It was never planned to be in the final cut. It was a joke."

At this point, I don't know if Saruman will be skewered at his end or not! Maybe! - Since the scouring is not going to be filmed, he has to die somehow!

The source was of course not tursted, but rather, "trusted"!
