The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Good morning Corin!

Funny Sean Astin punch line at the bottom of this!

Harry Potter

Is ''LOTR'' copying ''Harry Potter''? The wizard franchise is finding itself treading in familiar territory

'TWO' TIMING Similarities pop up in ''Potter'' and ''Towers''

'TWO' TIMING Similarities pop up in ''Potter'' and ''Towers''

The season's two biggest franchises have more in common than bazillions in ticket sales: Wizards, elves, trolls, and animated trees crop up in ''The Lord of the Rings'' and the two ''Harry Potter'' movies. ''Rings'' director Peter Jackson moved a jumbo spider -- not unlike the one in ''The Chamber of Secrets'' -- from ''The Two Towers,'' the second in J.R.R. Tolkien's series, to next Christmas' ''Return of the King.''

Though Jackson says he made the switch to improve plot development, Sean Astin wonders if there might have been one too many overlaps with ''Potter'' -- and other recent fare. ''When Peter told me they were doing big spiders in ''Eight Legged Freaks,'' he had this disappointed quality in his voice,'' recalls the hobbit. But Astin isn't bitter. ''I don't think Tolkien owns the patent on spiders or cave trolls or talking trees, although you might think so by comparing the films,'' he kids. ''But how many more 'Potter' books do they still have to film? I don't want to talk myself out of a job.''

I went to the ign website about Legolas' mounting of the horse and I found a link to 101 observations on TTT. I don't know if it's been posted yet but find it here. I saw a couple things of interest (by users...so unsure of accuracy):

"Watch closely when the riders come upon the pile of corpses in Rohan. Aragorn kicks a helmet, screams, and falls to his knees. No, this isn't just impassioned acting, Viggo Mortensen actually broke his toe in that shot. -Andy Myers"

I've never read The Silmarillion so those that have...does "George" make sense? "This is something I thought up after watching TTT and just completing The Silmarillion. I think I know how Aragorn suvived that great fall off the cliff and the reason isn't illogical either. There is a line to Aragorn about "let the grace of the Valar protect you" and that line lit a lightblub. The Vala Ulmo, the god of all waters, saved Aragorn! Yes, in The Silmarillion it clearly stated Ulmo ... dwelled alone in the waters of Arda around Middle-earth. That "grace of Valar" line and God of Water being Ulmo the Vala and Aragorn falling into water seems to fit together so well. Script coincidence or maybe just another little thing thrown in there by PJ? -George"

I'll have to look for this one next time lol:You can catch it at the beginning when Legolas and company are hunting Merry and Pippin. One of the shots from afar shows Legolas slip on a rock. Not very Elf-like. -Gracey Anthony

Another thing I missed: "When Theoden, Aragorn, Legolas, and Theoden's men make their last ride out to meet the orcs (Helm's Deep/Forth Eorlingas), look to Legolas' right when you see the shot from behind (as the horses are knocking away the Uruk-hai) and you will notice Eowyn there. -Melanie May"

" In one of the first close up shots of Helm's Deep, you can see that some of the stonework is newer and looks "hastily repaired." This is a detail straight out of the book. Helm's Deep was a Gondorian fortress before the Rohirrim settled there, and was thus very old and had fallen into disrepair. Erkenbrand, the Lord of Westfold sadly absent from the movie, had the fortress repaired, because he foresaw war coming to Rohan. -Mike"

"The young Rohirrim boy who plays "Haleth, Hama's son" (Aragorn takes a look at his sword) is in fact the son of screenwriter Philippa Boyens; Viggo Mortensen's son Henry is also briefly shown holding a sword next to young Haleth; conceptual artist Alan Lee makes another cameo (he was also one of the nine kings from FOTR) as one of the older Rohirrim collecting his sword before the battle; art director Dan Hennah also had a cameo as a Rohirrim in the same scene as Alan Lee. -Marcy Gomez"

Another thing I'll have to watch out for: "If you listen carefully when Frodo, Sam, and Gollum are going through the Dead Marsh, you can hear the commands of Elrond during the Battle of Mount Doom. -Michael Nguyen"

YES!! CHECK THIS OUT:"[The Ents] were meant to be featured a lot more! I met [cinematographer] Andrew Lesnie's nephew many months before the movie was released. He told me all about a private preview he saw of the entire uncut Helm's Deep scene, and he mentioned the appearance of the Ents right at about the same time as Gandalf's appearance. He said you see Orcs just running wildly into the woods and being speared by roots and branches and just generally being wiped out. This might explain why the end of Helm's Deep seemed a little rushed or too neatly climaxed. -Abba"

Thanks for the heads-up. I understand they were awarded some kind of a tie with SPIDERMAN??? My co-employee is a Spidey fan and he is chuckling at me this morning. ugh.

I saw the movie on Friday night at the Draft House -- the dinner and a movie place. It was fabulous. Best sound I have heard yet. The 7:00 was sold out and so we had to wait for the 10:30 show, and it sold out too!

Before the movie they had Tolkien questions going on the big screen, and you could answer with a keypad on the armrest. I guess I answered most and fastest because - I WON!! -- two free tickets to the Draft House Theater! I was proud of myself, and my daughter and niece who went with me were proud too.

I have to give the credit, though, to all you guys in the Hobbit Hole, for making me as knowledgeable as I am, however much that might be. ;^) Thanks!

Don't forget there were "spiders" in Minority Report also...and of course Spiderman...

I am feeling a little sheepish here. Last night the Mrs. asked me if Sean was the son of John Astin and Patti Duke...I said "I didn't think so" 'cause I was thinking of Mackenzie.

"Found something to watch, "Pitch Black"

Good movie! "

Wasn't it though? I heard they are going to make another movie with Vin reprising his role. Not 100% sure if it's a done deal or not, but I'd be interested in seeing it.

The horse he gets from Eomer is Hasufel. The horse that helps him by the water is Brego.

I seem to recall the name "Brego" being one of the old kings of the Mark and would suggest that a horse by such a name would be from Rohan. Maybe it was Eowyn's horse? That would seem strange if Arwen's plea to the Valar was more of a direct communication with her rival's horse. I'm hoping we'll learn more in the extended version, because the books have little to say on this particular ad lib.

Well, it's a really campy version of "It's a Small World" and ought to annoy anyone that views that thread. LOL

Steve always calls me his "Ray of Sunshine" whenever I'm being mean or sarcastic. Which is why I posted that smilie.
