The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Glad to see you made it home safely! We had a fun time as well. I do apologize for being late to arrive; I feel badly about not having longer to visit before the movie started. Unfortunately, it couldn't be helped.
Glad you're enjoying your cookies! ;)

Watched Signs Friday night. I just loved it. It wasn't a scary movie, but the way they did things still made you jump. And the tin foil hats... perfect.

My wife shares your appreciation of Vin Diesel! So much so that she's always eager to see his movies... she's talking about wanting to go and see "A Man Apart" when it comes out.
I'm not as interested... ;)

Have you introduced your wife to this actor:
http://www.connortrinneer.com/
If she has the same taste in men, she will truly appreciate this young man (he is a year older than me, LOL).

I think we did very nicely for getting our little mini-moot set up and going in such a short time. We knew you were going to be running late so not a big deal! But, we do have to do something again.... and plan with visiting time afterwards.
Okay, not until I got here tonight did I know anything about this job interview! So, what gives? If it's in the thread then I haven't read that far yet. But, then, I'm busy trying to do 2 things at once right now too.

So sorry.

Mel looked like an Episcopalian minister, which is pretty much similar to a Catholic priest in appearanceThat may have been what caused me to conclude he was Episcopalian.
Interesting, I thought, that the aliens were depicted as hostile
There are lots of scientists and UFO believers who think that any alien civilization advanced enough to get here has advanced beyond being hostile; Carl Sagan was a great proponent of that theory. Personally, I don't believe that. Humans are on the verge of being able to attempt interstellar travel, and we certainly haven't advanced beyond being hostile. Besides that, since they are alien, we have no idea whether they would even have the same concepts as our ideas of "benign" and "hostile". For all we know, they may not even recognize us as an intelligent species, and may not have any more qualms about using us the way we use lab rats.
I'm not all sweetness and light when it comes to meeting aliens. ;)

Have you introduced your wife to this actor:Yes, we watch Enterprise every week, and she loves his character on that show. She's not as enthusiastic about the actor himself though... she reports that he's "ok", but not quite her type. ;)
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Oh well, if I had a choice between him and diesel, trip wins every time. I can listen to him all day as well as look at him.
I wasn't watching Enterprise (as my son had me worn out on the other series), but the son had it on the day trip was "repairing" the captain's chair. Intrigued with him since.

Yeah, the tinfoil hats were funny. Even my wife laughed when the older brother had one on, and she doesn't surf FR.
To: Sam Cree
Incredible when you are watching a movie and it relates to your favorite message board, LOL.

I'm about 5' 3", but I'm the runt of the family so I get all the short jokes. My baby is your height. Of course, she's not a baby, she's 17 but her sister is 5'9" and I'm 5'10" so this really bothers her. However, I never ever mention it to her because she's so self-conscious about it. I just remember that in my teens, I was wishing I was 5 inches shorter because few males were as tall as me. Anyway, since I'm so crazy about Myranda, as I'm sure most of you have noticed, I like that height!

2JM: great catch, thanks for posting it. "Leithlo I Phillinn" is a favorite of mine. :-)
We were reading the translations, some were quite beautiful.

The job interview was one of the things that had me running late... I didn't finish with it until 4:15, and went from there to pick up Rose from work, then home to get changed, etc. Anyway, the interview was perhaps the most chaotic I've ever had; two of the people who "interviewed" me not only did not know who I was, they didn't know what position I was interviewing for. The two people who interviewed me who did know who I was, described a position very different from the one that my recruiter had described to me when offering me the position. Nevertheless, I suspect I will be offered the job; I have worked at this company before, and they are not very competent.
Did you specifically hear Rose and I thinking "A Man Apart" would be a great movie for which to meet at the drive-in?
Well, yes... but Rose mentioned wanting to see that movie the first time we saw the preview, I think the first time we saw TTT. So, I'm pretty much resigned to seeing it. ;)

I know about that female height thing. I am 6'. My son, at 13 is 5'6". My 11 yo daughter is 5'2". I have passed on that height to both of them.

Good to see you back! You had asked about Graduate Programs in Computer Science a couple of weeks ago. I found a listing of Grad schools in all disciplines
Here. There is a separate listing in that link for schools of Computer Sci. Our son is thinking about Stanford, and I suggested Harvey Mudd (also in CA), and Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Where are the dwarves?
Incidentally I found a good fantasy series while I was out: Lord of the Isles by David Drake. He manages to avoid most of the cliches, his cast is small, managable, and mostly likable, and his hero is a guy I actually admire. It's - well, it's what Wheel of Time should have been?

Am I alone in feeling Gollum is hamming it up a bit while complaining about the Elf-rope?No, but, I did not feel that way in reading because the distinction was so clearly made about the elvishness of the rope.
While watching Theoden yell "Forth, Eorlingas!" just before his final charge from Helm's Deep, I couldn't help but think, "Boy, Pelennor Fields is going to ROCK!"
I agree about Pelennor Fields, but the more I see the film the more bizarre Theoden's behavior seems. The guy almost seems bi-polar. At the very least insecure and at times indecisive. Am I the only one to notice this? I love that last charge though. This was what I wanted to see from Theoden all along.
