Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Successful pet sitting at its finest.Clare is going to cat-sit for some friends while they're on vacation. She's gonna go to their house every day to check on their two cats, give them fresh water, food, play with them, etc. They have an older Siamese, Bob, and a new Sealpoint Siamese kitten, Yuki. The family got a climbing structure for them last week and Yuki has been having lots of fun on it, so they will have stuff to do while they're home alone. Clare had agreed to do it as a favor, but when they said they'd pay her she was thrilled! She'll have some extra cash for OUR vacation!

Maybe, in a pinch.... I would rather find a friend of a friend.... some teenager who would love the chance to get out of the folk's house for a week and just stay here. Free internet access, telephone, horses, dogs, it'd be fabulous for a kid.
I would rather have that, than someone who would just come and feed and leave again. Since it is in the dead of winter, The horses should be in at night, and I don't like locking them in the barn when no one is here. They are too vulnerable. If I don't find someone to stay here, I may just board the horses somewhere at a boarding stable for the week, and perhaps Gidget could stay with my Dad at the beach. Then I wouldn't worry. As much.

How about a college student who is still home, but would like to have something to do the last week or so before going back to school? Judging by our sons, they usually get bored the week after Christmas and can't wait to get back to school to see their friends. This way, the kid would be out of their own house and have something interesting to do before going back to school.

Is there a vet school somewhere near you, or a vet STUDENT who could stay there during the Christmas break from school?

Hey Hair...you seen or heard anything about what's happening around Ft. Lewis or McChord -- there's a giant clound (dern near like a mushroom cloud) of smoke covering the entire sky east of Lacey. It looks like an explosion of truly massive size...like one of those big tankers or cargo aircraft went down.
I've tried to listen to news channels...but top of the hour news isn't on yet.
Something absolutely massive happened up there.
