The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I know. But, I don't think I need to start a refuge for anybody unless they get destitute. Sounds too much like welfare. You got to have no other choices before you come here!!!!

think that's why myranda's moved? :-)

P.S. I will also mail food to your current house before you get desperate enough to move here.

Do take one deep breath and think hard before you commit to unemployment.

I keep thinking around in a circle!

The job requires a move to Kansas. Okay, so I've never sold a house before and wasn't prepared for all that's involved in putting a house on the market. Also, this job wasn't a "done deal" until a month ago...the people moving now have had "the move" in the works since January (at least).

I found out on last week's trip that I was supposed to be permanent at the Kansas site the week after the 4th of July. News to me! I thought I had 'til the end of August. So how am I supposed to do "house stuff" or job hunt here when I'm working 40-hour weeks in Kansas?

I figure I could take the time off, get the house ready to sell, move back to The House, and live off of capital gains for a while. :)

Well I wouldn't exactly call myself destitute....

Another 6 months of this and I might get to be...or at least to a sell-off of everything I own. And at the pace and success of this job search so far, another 6 months doesn't look so far away.

That's why I urge caution prior to plunging into this situation. Sometimes, it seems, you can't get out.

That sounds like a good plan. I had also forgotten that I still have another small 3 bedroom house 6 miles from The Ranch. I don't think the Hobbit Hole will be without housing anyway.

No, you couldn't do both. Best option there (for keeping the current job, anyway) is to vacate the house and put it in the hands of an RE agent to sell (I have considered this option seriously, if I relocate). That happens all the time. It's a helluva hassle, and if you currently have a mortgage, it's dern expensive too (rent in one place, mortgage in another). But houses do sell pretty quickly these days. You'd need time for one good spring cleaning and repair session before marketing the house.

It is a monumental hassle. But having walked through this experience a bit, I'd take the hassle in a moment instead of the long, draining torture of rejection piled on top of rejection (repeat about 1,000 times so far) of a hopeless job search.

It blows your confidence away. I'm not sure I could convince someone right now that I could successfully flip burger at McDonald's (even though that wouldn't pay the bills anyway). It just eats you away psychologically until your interviews get worse and worse.

So if you do this unemployment thing -- move fast on efforts to go for another job and try not to let the rejections get to you. That's what's gotten me into my huge funk...so if you can avoid that perhaps you can pull it off.

You cannot imagine how deja vu that would be for the Mrs. and I!!! We've actually packed up once before and left for Texas!!! We had family (still do) in the Dallas area. And in our 20's, I foolishly left a job I had that was going nowhere and packed off for Texas. Actually moved everything we owned down there with us.

6 months later a Senator I knew called me and asked what the hell I was doing in Texas. Told me to come back to Washington and work for him again. So we packed everything we owned back up and moved it back to Washington. I've been here ever since.

So, no, I don't think we're going to repeat the event. If we go down, we're going down where we are (in a paid-off house anyway, which greatly slows the going down part).

So do RE people deal with repair guys? All the ones I talked with only gave me names of people to contact.

Only if you are lucky and find a real good RE person...and beware, most of them do the bare minimum. Generally, I'd say no: do the repairs (or have them done) yourself. Get a RE agent in to help you in determining what needs to be done for sales purposes and inspection purposes. THAT they can help with. But do the stuff yourself (or hire it out yourself, if you need to).

An RE agent would probably charge a horrendous fee to be the middle-man.

OOps. Sorry to hear that 2J, if you're still there. Thanks for the prayers. Have a good day. Maybe you are supposed to be taking care of your eye and not freeping.
