Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Yup. Nothing fancy - just a dark green 95 Toyota Tacoma XCab. But it's as reliable as the day is long. I want a Tacoma! But then, I want a lot of other vehicles. My car ('97 Corolla) is incredibly reliable, but cars don't come much more boring. I guess that's a good thing in a lot of ways. Gets me around, and that's what counts.
My younger siblings gripe about it's size, but that's their problem!

Yep I'm the one just starting to read it. I like it so far, but I'm only a few pages in. I might actually have to read LOTR first simply because I'm too anxious to finally read it!

We used to live in a rather snooty town in NH and there were hundreds of Saab's aroundWell...not really any snooty towns up here, but there ARE tons of Saabs, mostly older ones. Though lately they're becoming outnumbered by Subaru cars of various sorts - AWD, don't ya know.

I can not imagine being 8 months pregnant and having to go through that. That sounds really scary.

The only complaint I have about driving the truck is that there isn't any place to put baby gear. The extended cab is too small to fit a stroller or anything else.
That's why I drive the Camry these days. Trunk space galore!

Dawn: I hope I am not spoiling things for you for ROTK, then! Who were your fav characters from the films (Elrond was one of them right?)

"I am a real sucker for seeing any man cry"Me too! Maybe it's because you just don't see it that often. But it just breaks my heart when I see a man cry. That scene with Aragorn and Boromir....*sniff sniff*

where HAS carton been???? She is my fellow 'Two Cities' fan...
hey, btw, who here thinks Elijah Wood would be a FANTASTIC Sydney Carton? He probably wouldn't want the role, because it is too close in theme to Frodo, but I am in such admiration of his talent, I think he could rock with it!

Yeah, I think that is the best way to go :-)

That is a horrific story about your ear, 2J. Sometimes we forget what a thin line separates us from disaster.
I am glad you got through it as well as you did.
To: Alkhin
Well I heard a BBC dramatization a while back. I pretty much know what is going to happen.
I liked Elrond, but I wouldn't say he was one of my favorites. I just though he was getting a bad rep around here ;-)
My faves (I have a feeling Faramir will be added after I see ROTK!) in the TTT are Frodo, Sam, Pippin, Aragorn and of course:

That's why I drive the Camry these days. Trunk space galore!Trucks hold stuff! My problem is that on the weekends, I'm frequently trucking three or four teenagers around (siblings), and my Corolla has a miserable amount of leg room in the back. They want me to get a minivan! I'm too young (and too single!) for a van! Though I admit they ARE nice. Lots of room for instruments, without leaving them in the cold!
To: Dawntreader
OH good then!! You *are* familiar with the actual story then. I asked because I used to post frequently in Khazad-dhum and there were often posters who had only seen the movies and not yet read ANYTHING...so we were always cautious about 'spoilers.' I got chewed out in the Faramir thread for talking about an upcoming scene with Faramir and Pippin (that Boyd refered to in an article).
As droolalicious as the elves and hobbits and men are in the film, their talent doesn't come anywhere near to what I have come to love about the book characters. Bilbo was my first fav...then later Frodo and Pippin. Merry was a hard nut to crack, and Sam is adorable, but lost some of my sympathies for the way he treated Gollum. I am afraid I would have sided with Frodo.
But isnt Orlando Bloom a PERFECT Legolas?!? I wish the rest of the elves were as beautiful as he. Haldir had me in fits, and I kept wondering if Lorien was just a half-step out of reality from Montrose Blvd in Houston.

Why don't you look into a small SUV then? It's cooler looking than a van, but serves the same purpose.
The Toyota models are a bit pricey (Highlander, Rav4, 4Runner) but maybe something like that will do.

How long was your acute attack of vertigo? After I woke up at 3am with it, I had it for almost right at a year. For the first couple of months, they just let it go, waited to see if it would go away on it it's own. (This was after even more tests...actually had a CT scan where they injected some metal into my blood to see if I had a tumor...when that came up negative, they attributed it to the virus). Anyway, the vertigo didn't go away, so they did a special test on me, hooked my head up to electodes and everything...then turned me this way and that and pinpointed where my brain wasn't "getting the message". Then they gave me the exercises and within just a few weeks of doing them, I was able to get up in the morning without doing a bumpercar thing down the hall! LOL
The funniest thing was this: Getting out of bed required about 10 minutes of slowly rolling to one side, then slowly sitting up and getting my balance and then easing to my feet. Even then, I'd be wobbly for hours. Once the tornado alert went off in the night and I completly forgot about my vertigo, dashed out of the bed and dove headfirst into the wall!
