The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

The third is my favorite one in the trilogy. It's almost biblical and makes me cry. It's about incredible courage and the last part of it is just mind-boggling.

Oh oh. If they're talking about it making them cry I'm in trouble. I almost cried reading this.

Dawntreader, I thought that "The Hobbit" was kind of slow, but when I read LOTR, it was the kind of book that you couldn't put down, even though it was 1500 pages, I couldn't stop reading it, finished it in a few days. I was devastated when Gandalf fell into the abyss, not knowing he'd return chapters later.

I think it could be better to read LOTR first, then go back to "The Hobbit" later.

Do you think us hobbits are as fond as eating as the real ones? I am starting to get that idea.

"Thag you very buch" ;-)

I was really lucky. The virus was a mere cold virus I got from Matthew. I started having dizziness and a roaring sound in that ear and my OB put me on decongestants. What I as experiencing was the onset of sensorineural hearing loss (like Rush had) and it is considered an emergency event. But I didn't know...my OB didn't know. I was at work one night and the roar became very loud...freight train loud. I turned to my charge nurse and said "What is THAT!!??" and she looked at me like I was crazy. Then it stopped and the whole world sounded like I was listening to it through one of those little ear plugs through my left ear.

I went home and just couldn't believe it. I couldn't tell where anything was coming from and it was all very disorienting. I was in such major denial that I literally tried to ignore it! But in my heart I knew something terrible had happened and when I couldn't hear my toothbrush in my mouth that night I was really shaking.

I went to bed and woke up at 3am...I'll never forget it. The room was whirling over my right shoulder...like rolling down a hill in a barrel that never stops. I tried to get to the bathroom and fell down, started vomiting and Steve hauled me to the bathroom. Imagine being 8 months pregnant, rolling at breakneck speed down a hill in a barrel clutching a toilet and vomiting!

Steve took me to the doctor first thing in the morning. The doctor took one look at me and called an ear specialist. I could hear (with my good ear) her talking in the hall on the phone and it sounded pretty grim. At that point, I started thinking this might be something permenant...

The ear doctor took me in immediately. I literally walked down the hall and he ran a bunch of tests on me. Told me that I had Sudden Sensori-neural hearing loss. I asked if it was permanent and he said "Most likely".

That was over 4 years ago. I got some frequencies back, but they have to be very loud for me to hear and then they are all screwy. A hearing aid would only amplify those screwy sounds.

The world still sounds like it's coming to me through a little earplug earphone...and I still can't tell where things are coming from, if I can't see them...and I can't hear ANYTHING if there are too many sounds going on at once...I just overload. But for the most part, I do ok and adjusted just fine. This is the worst nausea/vertigo event I've had in a long time and I feel lots better now, after food and coffee.

I think so! We talk about food just about as much as we talk about LOTR!

Also spend a lot of time discussing food IN LOTR...

Let's see. Hmmmm.

OK, I have it! Let's have some honey roasted boneless pork loin with red potatoes, carrots and onions. Sauteed mushrooms, caeser salad and sweet potatoes with cinnamon and butter for sides.

I've got some fresh bakery rolls here and you can slice yourself up a sandwich or else just use them for sopping up the juice. ENJOY!

I'll probably be in my pick up, so you can just look for the couple sitting on the tailgate that has a FR bumper sticker on it! *grin*

You can ask my husband, I am a real sucker for seeing any man cry. If there is high emotion in the movie, you can bet your sweet bippy that I'll be holding back the sobs!

Yup. Nothing fancy - just a dark green 95 Toyota Tacoma XCab. But it's as reliable as the day is long.

I'm driving my husband's 95 Camry right now though, since the truck is better suited to his line of work (painting).
