The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

LOL! I can depend on you for an encouraging word when it comes to me striking out on something new! I'll let you know how my first homemade yogurts turn out. (This isn't frozen, this is the regular kind, with active cultures!) I've been thinking about how good yogurt is for you ever since the situation with Ruthy's baby and when I saw this gadget in the thrift store, for only 99 cents, I had to have it!

My parents are coming over and we're BBQing steaks and burgers on the Road Grill and watching the kids swim in their little pool till time for fireworks, then we're all heading to their house. They live on a golf course and the country club is throwing the big local fireworks display...we should be able to see it from her yard.

Doesn't it make you proud when your kids are enthused about something?? I am just astounded with how serious Matthew is about these chickens...he does a good job with them, making sure all their needs are met...shade, water, feed, places to dust in...

They reward him by perching on him and singing to him (they whistle a real pretty little sound when they are happy...all four of them do it.)

He's proud too...I can tell.

Oh, thus be it ever when free men shall stand,
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Power that has made and preserved us as a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust";
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Happy Fourth, everyone.

How appropriate this 4th of July! That is my most favorite verse of that song! I had never heard that one until after SSQ and I had moved to Tallahassee in 1976. One night when the PBS station was signing off (remember how they all used to do that?) There was a duo singing the Star Spangled Banner. Actually that is the only verse they sang, and they were accompanied by a single acoustic guitar. With the simple arrangement, the words were just that much more powerful!

Well, it's early, there is still hope!

I am sipping coffee and wondering what I am going to do.... Weed-wack I think. The fenceline is still clear (Because the grass *ain't* gonna grow till we get some rain!!!!) BUT there are some other more minor weeds and things that seem to be thriving out in the pasture.

Good Morning All:

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!

Need to get the backyard mowed before the sun gets over the yardarm. Looking like another hot one. Very glad we put in A/C last summer. It is quite enjoyable.

Old Glory is hanging out front, hoping for a breeze.

Neighbor is buying a box of M-80s $90 for 72. This is gonna be an interesting 4th. I see some "medication" in Samantha's future since it is apparently against city ordinance to take an ax handle to one's neighbor, silly ordinances.

Had an interesting experience yesterday that I wanted to share - I think it is a mystery.

There was a pair of birds in my yard, mid-sized songbird, don't know what kind, and a young one I think, with immature plumage and just barely able to fly. He had to try pretty hard to get up into any low branches.

He was squawling a lot like he was not entirely at peace with his situation.

Here's the funny thing.... He was being taken care of by another bird who was acting like his mother but was definately not his mother. She was half his size... a little sparrow. When she would come up to him, he would open his mouth real big like she was supposed to feed him.

He followed her everywhere she went and she would stop and call him if he didn't come right away.... When they were separated they were both stressed out.... (I learned this when trying desperately to get a picture of them) They were both definately together. So what is the deal? Do sparrows ever sit eggs that are not theirs and raise them? - Wonder how this happened?
