The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Well, I thought at first that must be what it was for, to get the glass out. But it quit unscrewing part way out and the bottle just moved around inside. And I still couldn't figure out how i would get the bottle out, since it was bigger than the plug hole! Still quite the mystery.

All I can guess is you can "adjust" where the bottle is in the carafe or tighten it up to make the seal good at the top...

Ha!

I'm looking for yogurt recipes. I found out how to do it. I looked in my "Encyclopedia of Country Living" by Carla Emory. She's a nut, but she knows EVERYTHING! Like a nutty, non-snooty down to earth Martha Stewart!

Sure enough, there were the instructions...step by step.

well, there was a vinyl car seat alert on the radio.

Say what? I don't remember ever getting any of those down in S. Mississippi! The first car SSQ and I had (it was mine, he says he married me for my car; he must have been REALLY hard up for wheels!) was a 1968 American Motors Rebel. It was appropriately grey with BLACK vinyl seats. You can just imagine how hot those suckers got in the summer in MS, then Tallahassee when he was in Grad School!

I won't even LOOK at a car with leather seats because I have such bad memories of searing legs on hot vinyl!

But I told her when we met time stood still for me and she got caught up...

Yeah right! SSQ is just under two months older than I. My sister called me this morning to ask if I felt old yet. She reminded me that I'm now middle aged, as long as I live to be 100!

She and her hubby live on the MS Gulf Coast and they got a TON of rain with 'Bill'. Her hubby had just gotten through digging a ditch on the side of their house to try to correct the drainage that had any rainstorm flooding their carport. It would have worked fine in a normal rainstorm, but this one just tore through it, making it wider and deeper and washing all the dirt right down into the Sound! They're going to have to get a truckload of dirt just to replace what was there. They need to plant some sort of ground cover on either side as well, just to hold the dirt next time.

Great news about the computer, Ruthy!!

We just got back from The Naked Fish. I had the Plantain Encrusted Red Snapper with citrus Sauce, Sauteed Asparagus, and Roasted Butternut Squash. Gosh was it yummy. I could only eat about half of it so we have lunch ready for tomorrow! I had a slushy drink called 'Tropical Sunset', that was made from Banana Rum, pineapple juice and mango. It was so smooth and delicious. I'm gonna try making some at home using Silver Rum, bananas, mangoes and pineapple juice.

SQ: I do remember those vinyl seats, as well. And the various ways to beat the heat, wooden bead seats, cloth seat covers, and the old stand by - a beach towel. Dang, those things were hot.

But other things on cars from that era were the vent wing windows and vents on the floor you pulled open. Plus my all time miss, the hi beam switch on the floor. I would like to see all those back.

I don't know what to tell you about the bottle. Can you look it up on the Internet to see if there are instructions about it's use?

Good for you about the yogurt! Joseph wants an ice-cream maker! I'm gonna think about it. We're loving the Zojirushi bread machine! I'm gonna make some Black bread with raisins tomorrow. The place we went to eat tonight has the BEST rolls and I want to make some bread like that.

Y'all have any big plans for the 4th? Clare and I are going to the town's 4th Festival. One of her friends, the other Girl Scout who was homeschooled, is doing her Silver Award project at the Festival. She's running a 'Fun Carnival' for the little kids so they'll have something to do while their parents shop the town yard sale.

Clare is working on her project, too. She's doing a chain of 1000 origami cranes and is going to send them to Japan to be placed at the Hiroshima memorial. She came up with that all on her own one day when she read about it on some site about Japan. I'm just thrilled she found something to do that interests her. She loves origami! She even folded a paper crane in the dark during the 'Skyride' at the Empire State Building last Saturday!

Yikes... having big trouble getting chat to work. the wireless here in the bar is just not playing nice. Must be because I have somehow ticked off the network gods today.

Have to run out now and find a goat, and a long knife.

Talk to y'all later.

I won't even LOOK at a car with leather seats because I have such bad memories of searing legs on hot vinyl!

I have one of those laser thermometers, and asked a neighbor if I could check out his car, which is black, and was sitting in the sun in 88 degree weather yesterday. The hood was 193, with other outside temperatures at 140-160. The leather seats were 146 degrees, as was the inside air temperature. We left the doors open for about five minutes, and inside temperatures dropped 20 degrees.

I have never regretted the luxury of sheepskin seat covers. Warm to the touch in winter, but never get so hot in the summer that they're "untouchable". I learned my lesson a long time ago.

I also have one of those aluminized "bubble wrap" sunshades that I put in the windshield when I know the sun will be coming in from the front while parked. It works well to keep the interior cooler, and prevent fading. But sometimes it works too well. Under just the right conditions, I came back to my Jimmy and found the rear view mirror on the floor. The sunshade turned the little space under the glass into a super-oven, and it got so hot the adhesive holding on the mirror lost its grip.
