The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Sounds lovely 2J. The coop I mean, not the nibbled cheese! LOL! :)
I just checked online and if it is the "worst case scenario" and my video card or motherboard is cooked, I can buy a new one (motherboard with integrated video card) for $140. Expensive, but I can save and buy that a lot sooner than I could save and buy a new PC!!!
Needless to say, I am much relieved!

When I turn it on, the black start up screen (DOS screen) with some information appears, but it is jumbled and weird colors and symbols are interspersed within the words. Under it is a sad looking blinking cursor, waiting to move onto the next task, but sadly, cannot.
It does want to start but can't, so at least there is still life!!
trini's husband Beeps also suggested the modem, so my sister will pull it out tonight and see if the PC starts normally with it gone. If that doesn't work, my guess is the motherboard/video card is DOA.

I want a Girl Raised In The South (GRITS) shirt!I got one about 6 yrs. ago. In another 20 pounds or so, I'll be able to wear it and it won't be snug fitting!! I got mine a Cracker Barrel; maybe if they get enough requests, they'll bring them back! I wish the one I have had less of a unisex t-shirt neckline, and more of a feminine t-shirt neckline. It would match the design on the shirt better. That would be a good suggestion for Cracker Barrel if they ever decide to offer them again! I'd buy another one in a different color.

Thankee kindly sir. I'm a GRITS, but I ain't THAT genteel! LOL!
I never was a part of that debutante, Junior League-type crowd.

Yes, we are both 29.And holding...

It could very well be the modem; pulling it out and trying to start up without it is a good idea. Also, putting your old video card into it to see if it bypasses the one on the motherboard is worth trying.
You might also want to try it with a different monitor, just in case.
If those don't work, then I'm afraid you may have to replace the motherboard.

Oh, I LOVE Carrot Cake!! Thanks so much!!
SSQ and I are going to a 'Cuban' restaurant tonight for dinner. My girlfriends gave me a $50 gift certificate! It is called "The Naked Fish", and the food is great; lots of seafood without a whole lot of sauces, etc.

Ruthie, was your surge protector some name brand like APC or something? The better ones carry $10-25K of insurance for the devices plugged into it, and are worth the extra cost.
A nearby lightning strike can induce secondary EMP into anything electrical near it. It can jump switches in the "off" position.
I'll defer posting my treatise on surge protectors unless requested. I just hope you can get up and running without too much trouble.

IIRC, I spent no less than $40 on my surge protector, but I can't remember the name brand. Hmmm....
I'll have to check it out when I get home. Regardless, I'm sure the need proof of purchase and all that jazz, so I'd have to do some serious digging around for it! *grin*

Cuban-style red snapper is a sure win, FWIW. If you aren't big into seafood, stick with the palomilla steak with rice and beans. Oh yes, and the fried plaintains (maduros).
And do not miss the desserts! Arroz con leche, flan, natilla, etc...Mmmmmmmmmmm....

300WM can address this better than I, but I don't know if you'd need proof of purchase if you have the manufacturer's info. Seems it would be their guarantee, not the store's.
