The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Everything sounds bad when described chemically, though, doesn't it? What's normal sugar in chemical terms?

And then there's that dihydrogen monoxide stuff...

sugar = sucrose. Rather tame name, actually.

pssst... but sucrose is made of a glucose and a fructose.

Fructose- now there's a word you use with care around teenage boys.

I have almost run out of Terro Ant Killer just trying to keep them under control

We put those things by the dining room window inside, under the window outside and by the back door. They worked like a charm for us. We don't have the little ones anymore, but now we have the carpenter ants back! We're gonna gas them, though.

Do the companion plantings help to prevent cutworms? We used to put the paper cups around the base of our tomato plants, but we also planted marigolds which were supposed to help keep the worms away. Would that work for broccoli too?

I should try using it outside, rather than where I see them coming in from. With all the rain though, it seems it will wash away.

I want to tent the house though. There are carpenter ants galore and they need to go!

Steve's trying to refinance our house

We've refinanced four or five times over the last two years. We've been riding the interest rates down. SSQ finds deals online that have NO points and sometimes no closing costs! We're fixing to do it again cause he found a 3 1/2% rate for a 3 yr. loan which is all we need since we plan to move next year anyway!

Splenda advertises that it can replace sugar spoon for spoon, a 1:1 ratio. But that can be a little overpowering for some palates. So it might help to use a little less splenda than you would usually use of sugar. I know when I backed off on the splenda in the cheesecake and increased the lemon juice a bit it tasted much better.

Nope. And you know, this group here has a VERY powerful set of prayer warriors. The devil certainly is delighting in tearing THAT apart.

That wicked cur is rubbing his hands with glee to see what has happened here.

That could be right on the money LF.

If I still get the aftertaste in my tea, I'll reduce the amount and add lemon.

OK, here's a Jalapeno Cornbread recipe from my "Vegetarian Celebrations" cookbook by Nava Atlas.

1- 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1- 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3 egg whites, lightly beaten
1- 1/2 cups buttermilk
3 tablespoons safflower oil (you could substitute any veggie oil, I assume)
1 or 2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced,to taste (see note below)
1/2 cup grated Cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese, optional
1/2 cup thawed frozen corn kernals

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Combine the first 4 ingredients in a mixing bowl. In another bowl, combine the egg whites, buttermilk and oil. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet mixture. Stir together vigorously until smoothly blended. Stir in the jalapenos, optional cheese and corn kernels.

Oil a 9 x 9 inch baking pan and pour in the batter. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the top just begins to turn golden and a knife inserted into the center tests clean. Allow the bread to cool in the pan. Cut into squares and serve while still warm.

NOTE: Whether using one jalapeno or two the result will be quite a spicy bread. You may want to wear rubber gloves while chopping them to prevent your skin from irritation or burning. If you'd like to make a milder version, substitute 2 -3 tablespoons canned finely chopped mild green chiles.

Wow.... and I thought I knew spicy food.
