The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Okey dokey. :-)
Better living through chemistry... that's my motto.
As an aside... I happen to work for a company that has done a great deal of research in various environmental and food issues up to and including the latest mess on endocrine disruptors. The long and short of it is that the dosage of chemicals from pesticides over a lifetime is a risk so small as to not even be on the radar. The risk from "natural" toxins in the "natural" pests that inhabit foods is actually about the same or higher.
I'm not saying that organic is somehow wrong. It's fine, but it carries statistically similar risks to any other form of agriculture.
The real winner in agriculture science is genetic engineering. It has gotten a completely mistaken rap. These are foods that need orders of magnitude lower levels of pesticide to remain pest-free and yet still yield high crop levels per-acre. It is an absolute win-win that is completely misunderstood by the popular press.

Oh 2J..... You put a chicken on his head! And now it is on the web.... ROTFL!
This could cost him a supreme court nomination you know.

Aren't you freezing to death, now that you are back in Washington? I drove to work with the top down this morning. :-)
Still checking the weather for the drive home, though. Might get to do it.

I thought you'd like that!
We did Square foot gardening when we lived in NJ. We're hoping to be able to do it again at the new place, whenever we get there.
To: Ramius
The main reason we're organic (which mainly means for us that we grow things in the season that they are supposed to grow, which cuts down a lot on it's problems, amazingly) is that Joshua "grazes" through the garden. The most I worry about (and I do worry) is him eating a spider, or forgeting to wipe off any bird poop. But we have him pretty well trained now.
Then again, we do it just as a hobby. If it don't grow, we're not out anything. Last year was horrible...this year fantastic (so far).

I did NOT put it on it his head! I swear to you, it hopped up there and Matthew ran and got me in the house to come see! I think this is Puffy...she likes getting on my head too and will climb right up there if I let her (which I rarely do, because of obvious reasons.)

I can't stand it when little ones are sick. It's why I never could be a pedi nurse. I'd be sobbing wreck all the time. My supervisor at work started out as an x-ray tech at Children's Hospital in Detroit. Those were her exact same words. After a year, she transferred to the ER at Detroit Receiving. She said it was much easier dealing with the daily shootings, stabbings, car wrecks, and drug overdoses.
We had to go through the NICU at Children's for the Y2K upgrade. Not a guy among us who didn't get the sniffles and runny eyes. But she said that was a good sign, because we were soft-hearted and would make good fathers. My walks through the morgues and working operating rooms were nowhere near that hard.
Oh, and let me insert a standard anti-opus here. Thank you.

What book (or poem) are you guys quoting from? It sounds halfway interesting You have no idea. :-)
That would be "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". Hunter S. Thompson.
"A savage journey to the heart of the American Dream". But that, sadly, does not begin to describe how twisted it truly is.
...Magnums. He obviously has no idea that we have Magnums. Has he ever seen a magnum fired at night in the desert? Of course not...

It sounds halfway interesting. Wait till you see what is happening
