Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I didn't know all that much about Diana - I'm kind of between generations, I guess. Her sons are the same age as two of my younger brothers. I vaguely remember some of the news about her wedding and the boys' births, but wasn't much caught up in it.

However, when she passed away, I was in Europe. I actually heard the news from my mom...we were chatting on ICQ as we sometimes did on the weekends, and she said "Did you hear about Diana?" No second name or anything...I figured she was talking about a friend and said "Diana who?" Then she told me what had happened.

It was a shock, even though I hadn't been that interested in her...she was part of my world and had always been there. And being in Europe...well, I think the whole continent was in mourning.

I've was in Paris a few months later. I saw more or less where it happened...and all the tributes people had left behind. It was something.

I think it would be horrible to have all your growing pains and your maturing process plastered on the front cover of the tabloids.

She was very young when she got started. 19! When I think back at some of the things I did and believed at 19... I cringe.

I believe mine will be Ronald Reagan. Diana was always high on my list. Dubya of course. And Benjamin Netanyahu.

Buddy Hackett died today. It's always sad. Katherine Hepburn was sad as was Gregory Peck.

Princess Diana never did anything for me. Somehow I was offended because she was not my idea of what royalty should be. But then, I have always been to fond of fantasy, and think nobility should be, well, noble. Certainly I think Queen Elizabeth is worth more than all her children, grandchildren, and in-laws together.

But I know a lot of people were heartbroken over Diana, and I don't have anything against the woman.

Elizabeth has lived through a time when her country needed her. She had far more opportunity to be of "substance."

I think there was a lot of substance to Diana. But she was young and just not up to the task of the constant media attention about her every move. She got better at it. But it was never easy for her.

I was pregnant with Becky when she died and have the front page of the newspaper that day in Becky's time capsule.

I stayed up all night watching the scene unfold and all I can remember thinking about was those poor boys and how she was really the only person that would teach them about the "real world" outside of the sanitized life of royalty. And everyone knows how much she loved her boys. They were the only thing she really treasured from her marriage with Prince Charles. I remember how she would let Wills suck on her pinky knuckle to keep him from fussing in public and she would look down at him and smile softly, no matter who was around. Very "un-royal" and that's why she was great!

Maybe it was because I was pregnant, but I cried my eyes out watching the funeral. Especially when I saw those boys walking down the street with those sad eyes on her casket.

I'm getting teared up just thinking about it.

Hmm, you may well be right. I don't know, I'm oblivious.

Someone entertain me, I'm going out of my mind. I've gone shopping, hung online, played three rounds of chess with my younger brother, read half a book, tried writing... and it's not even 3 o'clock.

I know. A lot of folks didn't like her because she was outside of the royal mold, so to speak. But she was a girl who wanted to be a teacher, have a family...a simple life. To be burdened with such responsiblity and with such high expectations is not a task many people would do well or even get through without a hitch.

Every mistake she made was shouted from the headlines. *shudder*

I believe she was coming into her own at the time of her death. Truly tragic, because she seemed like the type of person who would fight for what she believed in...even if it went against the status quo. I like that kind of spirit in a person.

I love our thrift store...I have almost no clothes that I DIDN'T get there. For some reason they rarely have good jeans, though. I don't know if it's 'cause I wear about the most common size or just because people tend to wear jeans until they wear out or what.

I'll be crying like a baby somewhere. And I was just a kid when he was POTUS!
