The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

is there a rule that I'm not following. Not that I'm aware of, but I don't know how they're teaching math now. I've always had a personal preference to make (x) positive, and let the numbers be negative... but as long as the answer is right, and your steps are logical, I don't know that it matters which way you go.
What did the webpage want you to do?

It doesn't say... it just says that x = 74.
I'm getting better. On Friday day, I couldn't even attempt to do the worksheet. This morning, I did all the problems and missed 6.
That's not too good, but my brother had to tell me that -x = - 16 is x = 16... That clears up three of them. One I just did bad math, but I redid it and got it right.
That leaves the one I asked you about and one more that I still can't figure out what I did wrong... unless I wrote the correct answer down wrong.

You guys really went around, you must have been exhausted when the NY trip was overWe were, Sam. We got home at 9pm on Sunday and by 11:30 I was off to dreamland. I dragged out of bed at 10:30 on Mon. morning feeling like I'd been run over by a truck!
We were supposed to be at a friend's pool party at 11. I finally made it at 12:15, and it turned out to be a surprise birthday party for me! They were worried I'd forgotten and had just called the house to see if I were still there! It was a lot of fun, and the rain held off until we were driving away about 4.

It doesn't say... it just says that x = 74. See, I figgered that out. Just couldn't show you how.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
I'm going to print the worksheet out and do it again.
If I just keep working it and asking questions, then I'm bound to get it.
If my two brothers can do math, so can I... after all, we come from the same gene pool. Math skills didn't skip me...

Seriesly, can I mulch these things? Or does that put them down too far?I mulch all the bulbs in our yard. It helps delay the ground freezing which is good for me cause I tend to forget to plant them until late Oct! The delay gives the bulb time to put out some roots before the ground gets hard.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
There is a way I can print out the solutions.
So, I'm going to rework it again... what I get wrong, they can show me where.
But first, I have to finish my end of month reports and transcribe a tape.

x = -74 is correct for the problem as you posted it... I guess you should double-check to make sure you got the plus and minus signs in the right place. It's also possible the wrong answer was given; easy to leave off a negative sign by mistake.

So, I did it correctly (provided that I have the signs correct in the original problem)

The delay gives the bulb time to put out some roots before the ground gets hard.Of course that has nothing to do with your area, does it? DOH! I'd mulch a little anyway to try to hold the dirt in place. You probably wouldn't have to make the layer too deep.

That's cute, they must have been going crazy waiting for you to arrive.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and many happy returns!
To: carton253
So, I did it correctly As far as I can tell you did! To get an answer of 74, the problem would have to be x-1 = 221-2x, or -x+1 = -221+2x ...
Always hated it when a teacher would give the wrong answer to a problem... would drive me crazy trying to figure out what I had done wrong, when it was the answer that was wrong all along...

In the spirit of yours and Hair's book reading from last night:
A Little Middle-Earth Gonzo Whyd Gandalf have to pick me for this road trip? I mean I was happy kicking back in the woods with my favorite crops, mushrooms and a little plot of Southron Gold which I planted from some seeds I picked up from this orc I had cornered. I told him to either give up his head or his stash. I didnt reckon they paid orcs well enough for that kind of plant.
So I was tending the garden during some downtime knocking in orc skulls, sounds just like a melon and a hammer, and in pops Gandalf with a puff of Old Toveys following behind him. Oh great, I thought, here we go.
Gandalf always gets a little crazy once hes had a pipe or five.
Strider! Come on, put that plate of mushrooms down weve gotta get outta here!, he said. He looked a little wilder than normal. Maybe it was because he had snakes growing out of his head instead of hair.
I started to ease my sword out of its scabbard to help Gandalf get rid of those snakes, I must stay calm, I hate snakes. Then I remembered that I only had half a sword. What kind of Ranger am I only carrying around half a sword, and theres snakes around!
Lets go!, continued Gandalf, We have to find that Gollum thing before he can get to the feds!
We started out, but I kept my distance from those snakes. Better not to tell Gandalf, itd only spook him into setting off one of his fire spells. Last time that happened it took me a month to grow my eyebrows back.
From my own brain. Don't tell anyone that I am a fan of Hunter Thompson and P.J. O'Rourke. It'd blow my nice guy image. ;^P

I take back every mean thing I ever said about Faramir. PJ did a horrible job portraying him in the film! Just horrible! He missed the very essence of Faramir! How could he? I'm sending him a strongly worded letter just letting him know my outrage!!!

Yeah, I'm thinking I should do that to hold them there and I can always move the mulch off of them later...right? 3-5 inches of rain and there won't be any iris left...
But, for the record, I've told my wife I am NOT planting anything else from her mother's yard. I've spent weeks trying to get all this in the ground. Weeks I should've been painting.
