Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

You better be careful. Plenty of

your bones clean before morning.

That Marlin thing you posted is really cool, be fun to own one. I do have an old 336 in .35 rem from about 1972 or so, that used to be Dad's, shoots a 200 grain bullet. I think it slightly more handsome than the new ones, maybe it's just because the wood has turned all dark. Not fancy, but likable, at least to me.

It was absolutely imperative that
we get to the Mint Hotel before the
deadline for press registration.
Otherwise, we might have to pay for
our suite.

Maybe thirty more minutes. As your
attorney, I advise you to drive at
top speed. It'll be a goddamn
miracle if we can get there before
you turn into a wild animal. Are
you ready for that? Checking into
a Vegas hotel under a phony name
with intent to commit capital fraud
and a head full of acid.

I was pouring sweat. My blood is
too thick for Nevada. I've never
been able to properly explain
myself in this climate.

I think it slightly more handsome than the new ones, maybe it's just because the wood has turned all dark. Not fancy, but likable, at least to me.Traditional finishes turn darker with age, and the older guns used a better grade (denser, darker) of walnut. Today, stocks are mostly beech, unless you pay extra for genuine walnut. And even then, it's a lighter, less dense walnut, unless they offer an option of a really expensive walnut.
I've had good luck refinishing modern walnut stocks with some Brownell's "military walnut" stain, which darkens and adds a nice red tinge. And a nice tung or linseed finish looks traditional, even if not too durable. For "durable", you have to go with the modern plastic finishes.

On Fri. evening, we saw the Broadway musical,
42nd Street, which was a REAL treat for me. When we lived in NJ, I used to see TV ads for the show all the time and I SO wanted to see it! It was just fabulous! Tom Wopat, of "Dukes of Hazzard" fame played the producer, Julian Marsh. I had no idea that man could SING so well!
On Sat., we went to the Empire State Building and went on the 'Skyride', a motion ride that showed the view of NYC as though you were in a helicopter. We didn't go to the top because they had done that on a previous trip to NY. We then went to Rockefeller Plaza and did a tour of NBC studios which was fun. After that, our group went down to Little Italy, but didn't stay long because the girls really wanted to see Central Park. We got on the subway and went BACK uptown, entered the park on the Fifth Ave. side. got as far as the benches at the entrance and just plopped down! Some of the girls got their names painted on watercolor paper in a decorative way by the street artists, and a couple of them had their portraits done. Mostly they just enjoyed sitting in the shade. We never even made it all the way into the park! We just watched folks go by, which was great fun.
Sat. evening we went to Dylan's Candy Bar which is a two story candy shop that is about 2500 sq. feet with both floors combined. The girls went back to the hotel after that and a huge group of them gathered in one room and stayed up until 2 am! Sugar highs!
