Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

And more info.

nope... the extension center said to prune and burn now... the fungus can get into the posts, wire, bark and grass underneath... best to burn and treat now, then treat again in the spring...

thanks OT!

dude?! YER OPUS?!

Yes, Doomsday was so good... there were a lot of interesting religious themes there, if you looked in the right place. I thought it was one of the best books I've ever read.
Have you read "To Say Nothing of the Dog"? It's Willis' funniest novel. Brilliant time-travel piece. You will never look at the Victorian Era the same way.

well... they are the supposed experts...

I think that other picture had some kind of fern growing in it. The moss is supposed to be 2 to 4 inches.
To: Overtaxed
well that's what I thought... but I ain't no Hobbity gardener...
To: g'nad
I know! - I spose you have to listen to them!
Though I had a rose with black spot for years, had pretty flowers anyway, and the spot didn't spread, found out what it was and it treated easy one spring! I don't think it is that hard to get rid of.

Yeah, the dog one was good. I am developing something of an affection for the Victorian age. Another similar one was Finney's book, "Time and Again," though that one wasn't as good, still fun, though.
I wanted my wife to read Doomsday to help her get an insight into how Christians think, but haven't been able to get her to yet. She finds the first 50 or so pages slow.

As you all can see, we have a beautiful well cap in the middle of our front yard...about 6 feet from where our stone path will be. Does anyone have any idea what we can do with it? We have looked at those plastic stones that cover them but what I don't want is something that looks out of place. We have lots of rock here but one great big one all alone in the middle of the yard would look silly.
Also, we need to have access to the spigot as it is the only one in the front yard. The family who lived here before had a wishing well over it all but I'd rather do something a little more creative...anybody out there creative?

I think it's great how you all help one another by swapping ideas and information. It can also be quite amusing at times. :-)

I saw that in the earlier pic, Mrsnad, and I think I would stare at that thing a long time scratching my head and pondering it. Let me stare at the picture awhile and see if that works just as well.

I don't think I remember those signs, we always took the train. I suppose they were still around in the 50's and early 60's. I like them, though.I remember those signs from when I was a little kid. There were a couple of sets along the way to my grandparents' farm, and we'd be on the lookout for them.
I saw a set at the Henry Ford Museum at Greenfield Village yesterday, when I took my nephew to look at the old stuff. And I found the one vehicle in the world that I lust after even more than a Hummer. At least I have a picture of me with my dream car now.

The spigot wouldn't be that hard to move up longside the house would it?... I think I would want to do that because I would want to have a hose hooked up to that spigot most of the time, and that would be even harder to hide out in the middle there than it would be up against the house.
That still leaves the well cap there, and I think I would build a wood box that matches the house and put a birdbath on it.... then maybe landscape some flowers around that.

Is that you in front of it? Yeah, that thing is cool, wonder if it comes in 4x4.
