The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Oh....and what do I fix for dinner?

I'm having a little tiny steak, covered in garlic powder and perhaps a bit too much cracked pepper. I'd share, but I don't think it would ship well.

Have you considered just 'burying' the flat stones so that they are just above the level of the dirt?

yup... we were just wonderin' about havin moss between the stones... I don't want this to turn into another obstacle to mow and weed whack around... I want low maintenance... course, diggin' down any level 'round here is a major undertaking...

incessantly cheerful anime

Have you seen the Fruits Basket anime series? Clare got a DVD for her birthday back in Feb. and her Anime Club just loved it!

Well if you sink em, you can just mow right over them, right? But diggin is a pain, I know.

No, never heard of it!

I was planning to watch "Mahou Tsuki Tai" - "Magic Users' Club". Very cute, with the best theme music ever... a not-so-subtle homosexual character, though. Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of those in anime.... all those bishounen types...

or write a nice depressingly bleak story.

Ooooh, fun! I was working on one of those. When it's finished, I might run it by you.

Cool! Let me know. Last time, I killed off the last Elf in the world. This time it's a story about a bright, intellegent kid who grows up to be absolutely miserable. Very Greek Tragedy.

This'll be a low-tech cyberpunk story set in a future America in which the 'blue zones' from the 2000 election map seceded... and basically went to hell-in-a-handbasket. Two siblings are trying to escape and meet miserable ends.

Well, my stories just aren't good enough yet for publication. Depending on how I feel about them I may put them out on the web somewhere. However, the Elf story needs major editing and the new one will require certain assumptions I'm not sure can be made...

Do you know how many really cool star names there are? I had to find some and it's quite neat. "Procyon", for instance, fits my story so perfectly!

Lil, your story sounds fascinating... what kind of miserable ends?

Re star names, I had a crazy physics professor back in the day who had two raven-haired daughters named, I kid you not, Andromeda and Callisto. Theirs is a tragic story as his idea of baby-sitting them was to set them down in front of a TV and pop in a 'Mechanical Universe' video (calc-based physics). One day, they'll snap and we'll hear about it on the news.

Anyhoo... the siblings adventure is going to be veeeeery complicated and I don't have the skill with words to do it right. Anyway, the red and blue zones are different countries- socialist turned anarchist and capitalist respectively. The borders are closely guarded and 'cept for the blackmarketeers, no one gets across. Well, the kids' mom is killed in a turf war and the kids need to go get food and water. The brother is streetwise and ambitious, but the sister is frail and needy. This frustrates him no-end. They make their way across the zone, avoiding hazards, trying to find water and come across a Mission run by an elderly pastor. In exchange for doing chores the children are offered shelter and necessities. He also teaches them to read and basic rules of civility. She prospers but the brother chaffes. Eventually the sister commits to earning a place in the red zone but the brother drifts back into the streets and takes up with a gang. She won't follow him. He sees this as a betrayal and kills her and the pastor. He dies that same night in a gang fight.
