The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Heya! Good mornin' to you as well.
Thread killer!
Hmmm...need a pun. I extinguished that thread? That thread burned out? I'm holding the thread at the line? The wind changed?
err, nevermind. I'll stop while I'm still ahead.
To: alexandria
Should have pinged you:)

LOL!
I couldn't let your earlier post about killing a thread pass by without comment, I'm the one who needs a pun, HEE! HEE!
I've killed threads a time or two. Hmmm!
Will I be charged with "murder"?

The ones I've 'done in' were mercy killings. ;)

I looked into the plane he was talking about too, and it is an enormous jet-powered plane, much different than the relatively small and relatively nimble planes commonly used here now.
Finding a lake big enough for that thing to take off with enough room for climbout full would be a whole 'nother level of consideration. The lakes down there above major dams might be the only ones near big enough.
I have seen the fire-fighting planes in action in film, and relative to the scale and heat of those fires, it does seem a bit like peeing on a forest fire. They are one tool, but the number of trips to have any impact on the fire as a whole would be enormous... It is like fighting a house fire with buckets, isn't it? Whether it is worth the risk of loss on every trip of pilots and planes to do the work would be a tough call.

Flying through the fire itself is a whole 'nother set of physics.... the air rising so rapidly that it is turbulent to fly through, but also difficult to get down in.... The trouble would be on the climbout after the dump, if they got low enough in the first place to dump it, once they have left the smoke column they are in high thin hot air for climbout, and the planes are at their worst for performance.

Impressive was a very popular stallion too.... So he is in a lot of lines in both AQHA and Paints. He bred a lot of mares before they found that problem.

Finding a lake big enough for that thing to take off with enough room for climbout full would be a whole 'nother level of consideration. You've got lakes Powell and Havasu in the north that might be big enough for a plane to take off from, but they're several hundred miles away from the Catalina Mtns. The turnaround time/cost vs. benefit would be absurd.
Regardless, the agencies who manage fire have it figured out pretty well and by and large they do a fantastic job with these unnaturally devastating fires. The real villians are the enviros and their delusions of omniscience.

Is that that cool huge Russian amphibian they are talking about? Although I had though that helicopters were used for that stuff.
On another note, here is the Chalk's Airlines Mallard landing in Bimini Harbor, since I seem to have Bimini on the brain.

Those look like crawfish boats in the background, which would make this mid August.

Is that a fish cake for carton? Fish shaped only. Otherwise, carton would be eating it alone. *grin*

Inside the cockpit. I presume that is a compass :-D top center. Pilot is wearing shorts, looks like.

Bimini from the air, with the indigo Gulf Stream in the background, which flows north just off the beach.

Good morning! Welcome back!
Glad you enjoyed the first two. I'm curious to know how the audio books differ from the printed books. The first two books are fairly quick reads, not very long at all. The third book, "Sign of the Unicorn", is where things begin to grow more complicated....
To: Sam Cree
Yeah - it is the cool huge Russian plane they (the guy LF is talking about) are talking about.

I'm curious to know how the audio books differ from the printed books. The tapes didn't say they were abridged, but I was wondering. Seems like the whole Corwin/Sorceror/banishing thing left out a lot of details. But maybe I'll pick those up later (don't tell me).
To: Overtaxed
LOL! I don't know what that means, but it makes me laugh!
To: Corin Stormhands
The abridged versions are two tapes per book, the unabridged versions are four tapes per book (I think). Just out of curiosity, were the books read by Zelazny himself?
