The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hmmm, no one's taking the bait yet. *drums fingers on the desk* Seems I killed the thread. Oh well.

I was scared when I saw the first couple pictures because it wasn't painted yet! I didn't want them to have *not* posted the paint job!

Well Mack has still been doing some studying on what may be wrong with my mare. (We are not big on vets, doctor, we try fixing things our selves before going to let a doc. "practice" on us:), anyway, he is about convinced that we are dealing with HYPP. It can be mistaken for seizures. So the feed change began Fri. I am going to put a saddle on her today to see what happens, just to have see if anything happens, (I don't expect it) then give her a month with the feed change and see what happens. The problem again is going to go back to, there have been times when she didn't do it for over a year. IMO, we won't know for sure if the problem is fixed for a long time.

Thanks (nice snaig too!)
It was a great trip. Weather was absolutely beautiful. And it actually is HERE as well!
Saw friends I hadn't seen for 20 years. And it's always good to be back on campus.

I'm trying to figure out a chicken tractor that is made with PVC pipe and tarps. I need something lighter. This one is moveable using a wheel barrow, Matthew and I can move it, but it's still pretty heavy.

You killed the wildfire thread? Perhaps they are bummed out because they think you don't fully support the water bombing amphibians....

Matthew and I can move it, but it's still pretty heavy. You planning on moving it a long distance? I would think that weight would be good. It will keep it from blowing over in wind. How frequently do you foresee moving it?

Well, the idea is that they are moved frequently enough that the grass isn't eaten clear away, and the manure doesn't build up so much that you have to haul it off...
How frequently that is, I don't know yet. Once a month? I don't know.

I am not real familiar with HYPP..... So it can act like this? Do you have a website that explains it well handy?

I think he's bummed out because I called him on his foolishness. Back in college, some roomies and I got our interagency red cards (wildland firefighting certification) and worked a couple prescribed burns in the Flagstaff area. I never joined a crew during the summers as I was off in NM working for the Boy Scouts but I know a thing or two about fires. And I know a thing or two about water in the SW- there simply isn't enough to douse those fires with. The best you can hope for is slowing the fire down and buy time for the guys cutting the lines.

I was just thinking that if you had to move it every few days, you would want it to be easy, but at once a month, your tractor will be more durable than a lightweight one in the long run.

IMO, we won't know for sure if the problem is fixed for a long time. Is HYPP (whatever that is!) something they can test for? Could they do a blood test or something to find out for sure?

Glad you had a good trip!

Listened to the first two "Amber" books on my trip. Wished I'd had more. But I think I want to start at the beginning and read them all.

I can imagine that the lakes that are around are not only few and far between, but are also inside canyons that are not easy to get into in a plane.
Also not to be ignored is that this area is already at a pretty high altitude isn't it? - 5-7,000 feet? (Trying to remember) That affects performance of the plane, expecially when there is heat. 90 degree heat will thin the air at that altitude to the point where the airplane thinks it is at 9-10,000 feet and performance is poor. I don't know those planes real well, but high altitude and heat make for poor climbout empty, let alone full of water. It might be a factor in how much they are used in that environment, it might not.

Yes there is a test, it is not entirely reliable. The best way is find out your horses bloodlines. HYPP came directely for a QH stud, Impressive. If your horse has Impressive in it's background and has smyptoms your 100% sure that is what it is. The pedigree on QH horse papers only go back 3 generations. In the 3 on her papers he doesn't appear. But she is all show horse on Her mothers side, Impressive was a show horse. So it is a strong possibility.
I'll get Mack to post some links about it.

I don't know those planes real well, but high altitude and heat make for poor climbout empty, let alone full of water. Bingo! Physics strikes again. Dropping water on the fire directly would mean flying through the smoke column and the superheated air (much more than 90 degrees). The water will evaporate before it hits the ground anyway.
