Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Our Borders had a guy with an owl! Clare said it was huge, but it was a female, so she had some brown feathers since she nests on the ground.
One of the girls at the Cafe dressed as Moaning Myrtle and had her face painted all white with a toilet seat around her neck!

Rain just started here.... Good for today, let it rain! - Pasture needs it.
But tomorrow it has to be dry or he can't haul my hay.

Lovely children g'nad:)
Mack is out in the shop taking my Harley apart to figure out why oneside of the back fender is closer then the other. There looks to be a rub mark on the tire from the blot that holds the fender strut. We're not sure if something has been bent in or not. When you take the back tire off, the brakes come off. When we have done this in the past it has always made me very nervous to ride again. I'm never sure what to worry about, the tire not being tightened enough, the brake not put back on right, and now, is somthing rubbing:)
There is a playday tonight. My daughter will be taking her filly that she is just starting, and her in=laws will all be there. They have bought a "kid" broke horse for their grandchildren. So Jennys step-son will be running the events. That will be fun.
If Mack doesn't get my bike running I may take my horse. But I'm not sure if I am ready for the commotion that is at a playday. Lot's of crazies:)

Having a moment here. We're playing for an open mic tonight and one of the tunes we're doing is "Star of the County Down", which I play on guitar instead of my usual instrument the mandolin. Since I'm rusty, I got out one of our old practice CDs to play along with.
After about a minute into the song I realized that there was a cello in the mix - Mom. And started to bawl. So I'm taking a break.
Why am I telling you this? I guess 'cause this is the first place I end up coming when I'm down.
I'm happy we have recordings of our playing with her, but it's rough knowing it'll never happen again.

"Star of the County Down", God Bless you, Rosie. One of the prettier versions I've heard of that favorite of mine is played by Yo Yo Ma, on his "Appalachian Waltz" CD.
I also have an orchestral version by Ralph Vaughn Williams which is actually my favorite rendition of the song. The name of that song, though, is "Variations on Dives and Lazurus". I know that Vaughn Williams did a lot of work researching British folk tunes and putting them into orchestral form, so I don't know which is the original name.

A very Happy Birthday Wish to you today!

That recording is a treasure Rosie.... I would listen to it and bawl if you want to, smile if you want to. It's rough sometimes, but those moments are wonderous... I am glad you have the recording.

It's very pretty. And fun to play! Unfortunately I'm about the only one in my family who isn't tired of playing it, but I got away with sneaking it into the line-up for tonight.
Guess it will be secretly dedicated to Mom...I'll be thinking of her in any case.
I think there are a few other names for it, too - for one thing, there's a hymn to the same tune. And two different versions of the tune, as well - one in slow 3/4 time and one in a rather upbeat 4/4 time. Right now we play the 3/4 time one, but we may arrange it later so we jump into the fast version at the end.

I remember the first time I sat down and watched a video of one of the kids birthday parties. My mom always did the filming so she isn't in many, but she was talking in the back ground. I hadn't expected it. But now I'm glad we have it, although I don't watch it much. Hang in there:)

I'm very happy to have it! You're right - it's a treasure. Just wasn't expecting it. I was listening and thinking "this sounds different than the way we do it now...what's different. There's something playing a bass line..." And then reality hit and I teared up right away.
She didn't start playing music with us until near the end. So it was from only six months or so before she died.

I felt the same a few years ago when we got out an old video to watch and Mom was unexpectedly on it. Makes you feel funny, but it's nice too.
Even today, over 10 years later, I still have the impulse to call and tell her about things.
I like to think she is still here for me when I need her, though, and am sure she is in a way.
