Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

No kidding! - She's got a whole flat fellowship! They don't make Boromir though! I haven't seen one anyway. I am still looking for one to complete the set.
We did make an addition to this grouping though. Well two. One is Gollum and the other is Smeagol. I guess I should take another picture that includes these two. Oh, and we got a Saruman standee also, but he stands on the other side of the room. Hehehe!
I will look into the "Journeys of Flat Frodo" soon...sounds interesting!

Do you think something that caused that much pain to cause that type of response would end that quickly once it stoped being pinched? I do. I always have thought that. I tried different saddles, pads, Etc. The problem is she doesn't do it enough to get a handle on it, but she does it often enough and bad enough to make it dangerous to ride. But I also thought if something was being pinched, since I think it might be at the base of her neck that it might be sending some kind of electrical charge to her brain that triggers a siezure.???
From what Mack has read so far, her siezures are on the mild scale so far, but I have thought they were getting worse when my son was trying. But thinking about it, his saddle is ALOT bigger and heavier then mine (roping saddle). That might be why they were worse when he was riding her. Becky

something triggers itThe saddle.
One of the biggest problems is the fact that she doesn't do it often. She didn't do it for a full yr the first time, then it was another yr before she did the second, and so on. For a while it seemed a yearly thing in the spring, that is why at first I thought it might be her cycling. It still could be. But the implants didn't stop it.
Is there tests that doctors do to people to see if they're epiliptic. Or do they have to see a seizure? Can you have seizures and not be epiliptic, like in the post I sent to Hair about the scar tissue?

Mandolin is a blast! And it's really easy to at least learn basic chords. Let me know if you ever decide to pick it up and need some tips! I'd be happy to talk mandolin any time. I need more than tips, I know nothing about it! My husband bought it because it was beautiful, the back of it is made with strips of wood of different colors and it's highly polished, just gorgeous. I will find it today, bring it out, and dust it off. It's a shame that I haven't ever learned how to play. I'll get a "mandolin for dummies" book (lol!) and be sure to ask you for advice when I get stuck. Thanks for your kind offer to help!

Hey girl!! Long time no chat with! If you're like me you;ve just been flat out busy!
If you're collecting Cary Grant movies, you must have Father Goose, one of the funniest of his movies. I just love Leslie Caron and Trevor Howard in the movie as well.

There is an odd case in a horse that I am now remembering. Not like yours maybe, but nevertheless, another case of the same kind of complete personality change...
There was a gorgeous Arab named Sahara who was lovely and tractible, friendly and quiet, and quite highly trained.... BUT.... she would have these episodes where she would just PANIC. There was always a trigger event, a noise, something flapping, that would set her off, but she didn't seem to have a 'half-startled' response to a surprise... if she got spooked, it was sudden and complete life-or-death *panic*. Like she was missing some internal emotion meter that would moderate what the appropriate response should be.
I came and rode her to help a friend evaluate her. The woman who owned her was so frightened of the horse that she would no longer ride and wanted to give the horse away. She rode really nicely for a good long test ride, until I stopped her at the rail where everyone was standing, smiling and saying how nice she was going... Saying that I didn't see a problem, she was a nice horse, and without thinking about it, I grabbed my cup off a post that had ice in it. I was on the ground in two jumps. Out of the blue. That is what would happen every time she was frightened... Instead of a mild startle, it became a full out panic. Afterwards, she was calm and quiet and worked nicely again through my nervous couple times around.
She also considered that she could use the horse as a brood mare because she was so beautiful. But I thought it wasn't a good idea because if she had a screw loose in her brain, that might also be passed on. I don't know what became of her for sure, but I think she put the horse out to pasture for awhile, but eventually had the horse put down.... afraid that even if she gave her away, the horse would end up hurting someone because of this.

Do you think something that caused that much pain to cause that type of response would end that quickly once it stoped being pinched? I do. Very much so. Some kind of acute, sharp pain that is not tolerable, and it doesn't happen all the time so she runs until it stops, no matter what that takes.

Yeah, that does sound alot like this, that is a good description, Panic. But she gets this dazed look about her that looks like her brain has totally disconnected, and when she comes out of it, she looks a bit confused, like "I know something just happened, but I don;t know what." That was the impression I got when she pulled it at the ride and fell on me. When she stopped on the lunge line and came over to me, it was almost like, you may think this is crazy, but that she was scared and sorry for what ever she had done. Mack and my son use to say that was just my soft heart for her showing up, but my son now says she get a dazed confused look about her when she is having a spell. Do you think horses have expressions in their eyes? or am I a bleeding heart:)

afraid that even if she gave her away, the horse would end up hurting someone because of this. That is exactly where we are at. I would have to tell about this problem. Who would buy her. If I didn/t tell, well I can't even consider that. But I don't want her abused either. I was hesitant to breed her. That is one reason we have waited a while before breeding her again. We wanted to see how the baby would be. So far so good. Another reason I think the problem has something to do with either a bad memory from her breaking in or an injury that flairs up. Becky

Not usually. An epileptic is someone that has seizures. In an injury or acute illness (child with high fever) it could be a one time thing but not usually. When people have a seizure they may have a few seconds warning (usually an aura) but others usually don't. The movement is non- purposefully and they are usually drowsy and maybe even confused during the recovery phase. Don't know about animals but just doesn't sound like what your horse is doing. The saddle seems to trigger but what else is going on when she has it on. Do you always lift and put it on the same way? I'm just wondering if when saddled someone injured her and she relates it to another sensory. Like you are wearing a red shirt when you saddle her, she sees a ring, a boot etc. It's strange because she doesn't react to the saddle this way each time. If it's not medical it may be something else triggering than the saddle itself. You know they have pet shrinks now, don't you? :')

Do you think horses have expressions in their eyes?Good morning. :)
I have no experience with horses, but I know that dogs can have expressions. We had a dog when I was little that, when he got older, would get seizures. They were caused by a spinal problem. When the seizure was finished, he would always look around with a confused, half-guilty expression, as if he knew he'd done something but he wasn't sure what it was. Then when I would pet and soothe him he would always look relieved and grateful: relieved because he knew then that he hadn't done anything wrong, and grateful for the comfort.
I have no doubt that dogs have emotions, and show them. I would assume horses do too. :)

If you're collecting Cary Grant movies, you must have Father Goose, one of the funniest of his movies. Oh yes I have that one! It's fantastic! It's one of my favorites too. I can't list only a few favorites. Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, Charade, Bringing Up Baby, The Awful Truth, My Favorite Wife....see? ;-)

I like "Arsenic and Old Lace", though I've seen it too many times.
