The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Ususally you could tell before you climbe on her if it was going to be good or bad. Since for so long we thought she was just being a brat, I went ahead and climbed on, because I didn't want to be a wimp,

So she would seem nervous or 'not right' before-hand? - That is a very good thing then, if it doesn't come out of the blue. This time around, then, it will not have to be a battle of wills or a test of courage.... If you know what it is, you don't have to ride if she is in a 'state'. It is no longer a training exercise.

When this happened before, was it ALWAYS at the start of a ride, or did it ever happen halfway through? - If you thought she was gonna blow and you didn't mount her, but rather lunged her for awhile or let her stand, *would it pass* if you didn't get on right then? Did she ever have the episodes before you ever got on? Does she ever have them at any other time? like in the pasture? - Or do you think it is tied to either an emotion or a physical effect of being saddled?

Phenabarbitol

Well, at least she would always tell you the truth... :~D

How does this netflix thing work?

I see Corin gave you the scoop already, but wanted to put my $.02 in. We've been members since Oct. of 2000, oddly, the same time I jointed FR! They have a huge list of movies of all types. We've watched over 200 films in the last 2 1/2 yrs. The best thing about it is that there are no late fees. If you forget to send it back, you just don't get the full advantage of your 3 a month deal. If you don't feel like watching that movie just yet, you can hold on to it for a couple of weeks until you do. We had Mi>The Green Mile for almost 4 months cause I thought it was going to be a real downer and just wasn't in the mood. I finally watched it, and it was GREAT! But I didn't have to worry about late fees piling up or anything, so that's a load off my mind.

If you run across a link for a free month's subscription, check it out!

I just visited your profile and it does appear that you and I have a lot in common; contrarian, smarty pants, notoriously poor speller.....LOL! You know everything I always wanted to know about htlm but was afraid to ask. Where did you learn all of that stuff? You put my poor profile to shame!

Cary Grant is my latest obsession. I started collecting and watching his movies two months ago and am up to thirty-two. I have been picking them up on eBay recently though and have another twelve on their way. My favorites are Gunga Din, People Will Talk, and Talk of the Town. So far, that is. ;-)

So she would seem nervous or 'not right' before-hand?

Yes. I can't think of anytime where I didn't know she was having a bad time. But like I said, I always thought she was just nervous, or being a brat. Sometimes she did seem nervous, but didn't throw a fit, and after a while of riding would be fine. Now I think it is because the saddle would shift around and ease up on whatever causes it.

When this happened before, was it ALWAYS at the start of a ride, or did it ever happen halfway through?

Always at the start.

If you thought she was gonna blow and you didn't mount her, but rather lunged her for awhile or let her stand, *would it pass* if you didn't get on right then?

Only tried it that one time, and it passed then.

Did she ever have the episodes before you ever got on?

Yes, sometimes it happened when we got done saddling, but had not gotten on. Sometimes she did it while she was still tied where we saddled her.

Does she ever have them at any other time? like in the pasture?

NO. Not that we have ever seen. And when she lived here, not out on pasture, she was right out my front door and I watch my horses close all the time:)

Or do you think it is tied to either an emotion or a physical effect of being saddled?

What ever it is, it is tied to being saddled.

She was broke in in a rather rough way, somethings were done, that I did not know when I bought her, but I have wondered if she hasn't sustained some type of neck injury, and maybe scar tissue is building up (why they are getting worse) and if the saddle hits it just right, it triggers this response. Do you know if seizures can happen from something like that? I'm just now getting others to consider that it is a physical thing that she can't help rather then a mental thing and she is a brat. A brat would not be so good as she is when she is OK. And even though I can tell when she is not good, they do come out of the blue. I mean, one day she well be great the next morning she is like a wild dog. That is not normal bad temprament horse, do you think? I tried implants to stop her cycles once, to see if that might be the cause, but it still happened. But it could be a hormone thing too, out of balance, when she had her foal, when we weaned it, she continued to produce milk for over a year. Becky

*shudder* Something with the size and strength of a horse with PMS?

Maybe I need to have Elizabeth stop going to the stables......

I don't know about seizures.... but it could just be a response to some kind of acute pain. - something in particular that gets pinched.

Far as I can tell, they're legit copies,

They look just like what you'd get at Blockbuster. They come in a Mailing envelope, with a pre-paid return mailer. When you're done with the movie, just put it in the mailer and send it back. Just for our own organization purposes, when we receive a movie, we immediately write the name of the movie on the red cover and we don't remove that cover until it is time to return the movie. That way, we'll know in which mailer the DVD sleeve belongs when it's time to send it back. I think there's some sort of bar code that connects the mailer to the sleeve, so that's why we do that.

Well my idiot book advised that I not start out with a mare. Said they are too moody lol. Doesn't sound like seizures to me though, Becky. I'm no expert but it seems like something triggers it. Animals have phobias like people. Cindydawg must have been abused before I got her. She doesn't like men, hates them in fatigues and goes absolutely nuts around water. You would think SHE was having a seizure. Could be anything ( a color, scent, old injury etc.). Maybe yall could look for a common denominator. What are you wearing, what's around her, what's the weather like things.

Thanks for the kind words about my profile page. It's been so much fun putting it together. Mine's a work in progress too. There are so many more things I want to talk about there but I guess I would have to cut a few things to make room. NOT the LOTR section though!

You play mandolin? Interesting! My husband bought me a mandolin ages ago before we were married and it's just sitting in my closet because I don't have a clue how to play it. It's a beautiful thing though. I should at least display it. Maybe if it were out here I might plink around on it occasionally and maybe I would even learn to play it.

I love that picture of Fiona begging! Too cute!

"As for Sam...feel free to admire him, but remember he's mine."

Yes Ma'am!

Yep, that helps a lot! If I don't have my instruments out in easy reach, I tend to avoid practicing.

Mandolin is a blast! And it's really easy to at least learn basic chords. Let me know if you ever decide to pick it up and need some tips! I'd be happy to talk mandolin any time.
