The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I made one of the recipes from the Atkins site today: Pork and Vegetable Stew. It's pretty good! I added some yellow squash in addition to the zucchini.

I'm off to work now. Starting my 4x10-hour shift today.

How about one of those evenings instead of lunch time? Would an evening get-together work for either of you?

I'm going to paint grass and flowers along the back bottom of the coop...with sun and clouds too

That will be really cute! Is that the side the neighbors will see?

Good afternoon all: great trip, back and all caught up; had a great visit as well with Sue's folks where the Big Arkansas River and Little Arkansas River come together. (pronounced Ar-kansas not Ar-can-saw)

OT: don't know why not, the genus Carya was wide spread before the glacial periods; although now 13 of the 16 remaining species are located in North America. btw, as a follow-up to the West Nile discussion we had a while back, this issue of the Missouri Conservationsist had a side bar about the suseptibility of crows and blue jays to west nile virus.

Hair; that is one nice frog, your follow up on the release was a great photo story. Kudos. Enjoy the beach trip.

G'nad; home furnishings, looking for bent willow chairs, aspen pole canopy bed, knotty pine dresser, walnut coffee table, cane chairs and oak plank table? what have I forgot?

2JM: great looking chicken coop, how are Jarjar and Roy taking to the new ones? Sounds like the 2-Jedis are having a great time; almost a country experience in the city.

Tomorrow, back on the road for a round trip to Branson MO. About a dozen of us in two mini-vans to attend a ribbon cutting for the new highway around half of the north end. Spent about half time in Branson in Summer of 1992, walking the hills and talking to land owners and NOT going to shows. lol. A few chores are calling but will be popping back until "maintenance" shuts us down.

Well, the coop is practically finished. Here it is...

Here is the front of it with the door open.

Here is the cross bar that I intend to hang the water from eventually.

Here is the nest box side...the sunflower on the nest box access door still needs the center colored brown...Steve went to get me some brown paint.

Here is the other side...with a little jalapeno plant.

The metal roof is secured with wing nuts so it will be easy for me to reach in and fetch the feed box which will be attached to the back wall.

Hi Suzi!

I'm fixing a nice dinner here for my dad... roast beef on a tomato-onion mixture. It's really heavenly. And home fried potatoes on the side, a nice salad, and ice cream to finish off.

I got him a nice book for a gift since we couldn't find the thing we wanted to get. He'll like it. I'm sure he will because I would like it.

The little ones are so tiny that all they do is eat drink poop and sleep...sometimes wander around in the box a bit. Mostly they just sleep. It is in the mid-80s out there in the porch where they are and they are cozy and comfy.

The teenage birds have not met them yet and won't until they are a little older and able to go outside. Then I will put Jar Jar and Roy in the coop and let Puffy and Benny wander around nearby till they get to know each other. The older chickens would likely kill these right now if they got to them. The pecking order is a series thing!

Oh that is just TOO cute!! Love the jalapeno plant! Have the birds investigated their new home yet? When will y'all put them in it to spend the night?

Beef, it's what's for dinner! I did shish-k-bobs, minus the k-bobs. We discovered a long time ago that it is easier to do it without the skewers. I do the meat in small cubes on a porcelain grid designed for grilling fish. On the other side of the grill, I do the veggies in small chunks in a grill wok. It is SO yummy.

We ate supper before we went to 5:30 Mass, and now we're fixing to have Blueberry Pie, John's favorite dessert.

We got him a DVD, Unlocking the Mysteries of Life. He had seen it on PBS or the Discovery channel and liked it a lot. We also got him a Compost Turning Tool. You push it into the compost heap, and as you pull it out, the wings at the business end come out and make a hole in the heap so that air can get through.

I think we'll leave them in it all day and then bring them in at night to sleep in their box. They still don't quite have all their feathers.

Just for a couple of weeks or so.

They start laying at about 4 months or so, from what I understand...

Jar Jar and Roy are probably a month old. The babies are likely 3-4 days old.
