The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Gnomes, dwarves, if we're talking lawn statuary there's no difference.

What the late humorist Jean Shepherd called "slob art". But when we build the new place I'm gettin some of that! I want some pink flamingos!!

Isn't he the one that wrote "A Christmas Story"?

My favorite is the one where the housekeeper is away, and Siegfried makes Tristan cook, and all poor James gets to eat all week is "bangers and mash". And then the one day, the potatoes are burned....

I love those stories. Herriot was such a gifted storyteller!

I thought they were cute among the flowers. Are they tacky???

In town, they might be, but out in the country they fit right in! Celebrate tacky!!

Either way she hasn't read Herriot before

Yes, he has written several books and they are ALL wonderful. Your daughter will love them! Come to think of it, I'll get them from the library for Clare. She and I watched the BBC adaptations recently and she loved them! I remember when they were first shown on PBS!

Well, they've been sitting in my living room for yrs. now, but after I got my flower garden I moved them out there. My mom painted them, ceramics, and I inherited them, and I never knew what to do with them. Seem more appropriate in the garden.

Yes he is, and the one where he mentions 'slob art' is called Ollie Hopnoodles's Haven of Bliss. It is about Ralph's family going on a summer vacation. If you can find it on video, you have GOT to see it!!

And when James had to go see that other vet - what's his name - Grennet or something, every time he ends up absolutely sloshed. Oooh, and the one where he describes in detail the way the farmers' gates always fell on him. Or any of the many cow-birthing scenes.

And there was the one with the pig with the boil that nobody wanted to lance, and Tristan got stuck doing it and it chased him round and round the pen...

Think I know what's I'm reading tomorrow. Night all!
