The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

We got the itinerary yesterday. We're going to dinner at a Diner on Friday evening, then to see a Broadway show. On Sat. we'll go the the Empire State Bldg, and take a tour at the NBC studio. Then we're breaking into small groups to do some stuff. When we meet up we'll go to Mars 2112 for dinner, then to Dylan's Candy Bar. The girls are especially looking forward to THAT! On Sun. morning we're bringing some Girl Scout cookies to the Firehouse that lost the most men on 9/11. Then on the way out of town, we're going to stop at the Bronx Zoo.

It's going to be a busy weekend, but it'll be fun!!

NYC would just be too much for me. I don't like cities... get lots of Frodo photos!

I told the Troop leader about bringing Frodo along. She thought that would be a hoot! Apparently there's a Flat Girl Scout who troops can take on trips. I'd never heard of it before she mentioned it. She's kinda like Flat Stanley.

I will certainly get a pic of Frodo at the Fire Station and the Bronx Zoo. Maybe I can get one of him next to the oliphaunts!

My fire in the pasture almost got away from me.... it was too hot. Pasture fires are better in May when everything is still wet and green.....

The wind picked up and the grass around it would just flash burn..... eeek! As soon as I started it I could tell it was gonna be too hot, I wished I hadn't started it at all, but I was committed.

I wished I had just stayed back in my safe Hobbit Hole and had a lazy Saturday

I hope that, aside from a good scare, things are back to normal. Put on a good movie, and relax.

Yes, things are back to normal.... it didn't even get that bad, I just saw the potential for it to be more than I could handle if the wind kept blowing, but it didn't.

Trouble was it was a big pile of very small sticks and it burned REALLY hot, immediate pile of red embers, and those kept rolling or blowing off! eeeek!

But now that I have a nice clean burned patch out there, I think I will go throw some more sticks (not too much) on it now that it has settled down.

I'm tired of hacking weeds! The sunflowers will just have to wait until next Saturday.

Yes, I know it is a frog.... But WE DON"T HAVE FROGS LIKE THIS HERE!

This is Mrs. g'nad

You should see the frogs on my dad's place when I was growing up. I remember a time when we were watching some new baby ducks swim on our pond when one went under suddenly. It turns out we had some rather large frogs snacking on ducklings. My dad got his pitchfork out, killed one of the frogs and pulled a baby duck out of it's mouth.

Hey 2JM, it's a good thing those chicks can't swim.

Hair, did you ever find out what kind of frog that was?

LOL....we started a fire once that got away from us when there still wasn't that many peopleliving out here. The first 10 yrs we lived here it happened to someone or other every year or so. We all just learned to call each other and let em know fire was on the way. It was not that big a deal. Then we started getting alot of city folks in who did not understand that a grass/deadleaf fire was not that big a deal. We went about 7 yrs with out everything burning off until the inevitiable happened. By then there was so much grass and brush and dead leaves it was a major thing. There was actually a helicopter bring water over from a nearby lake and dropping it. Personally I thought that was over kill. People just don't realize a grass fire every couple of years is actually a good thing and rarely burns a house down.

pulled a baby duck out of it's mouth.

Hello, Mrs. gnad:) This happened to us one time with a snake and a chicken. I went out to feed and found a snake in a chicken nest, mother hen was fussing, the snake had a chick in its mouth, and one inside. My husband shot the snake, the chick in it's mouth ran off squalling as soon as the snake was dead and let go, we then cut the snake open, wondering if the other could still be alive. It wasn't. We don't know if it suffocated or something else??

How's it your way?

We had a 80+ day going, high humidity, suddenly a thunderstorm came up. It actually hailed a bit. From the looks of the radar it might rain the rest of the evening. That's why I'm here:)

I hope your daughter keeps having fun and enjoying it. Is there any chance she will get to ride? Did she get to shovel poop yet:)? I think it is so cool to see young girls get to hang around horses for the first time when they have been dreaming of it since they can remember:) I can relate. Took me 32 yrs to get to do it. I made Mack promise me a horse before I said I would marry him:) We were married nearly 12 years before we managed the first one.

Although it will probably make Corin feel better to know that we are expecting thunder showers this afternoon.

Hot and humid still here. We all got plenty of sun at the game (we lost, but it was a good game). Went to Friendly's afterward, and were a little concerned that Jr. was having an adverse reaction to the heat. He downed a good bit of water then got the chills. But he was okay after he started eating.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get storms tonite. But today was the first day it's felt like summer. Gonna take Luke to the pool in a few minutes...he needs a bath anyway...;-)

Least, that is the line of reasoning my Mom and I used with my Dad.

You know when I read that I thought ksen was posting, and I had a whole new image of the Man of Gondor...

Hello Mrs. g'nad!

I've been working on the chicken tractor all day...Steve just finished putting the chicken wire on it. Here is a picture of it pre-wire...

The painted coop.

The nest box. Note the little door to fetch the eggs through?

I bought both those paints out of the reject basket at Lowes...mistakes made in the mixing, I think. Just cost me a couple of bucks for some pretty nice exterior latex paint...

You getting a gully washer, Becky? We got the gust front and some nice cool air, some thunder...but that was it. Went just south of us.
