Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Make Mommy and Daddy proud I can think of a few 'mommies' who would be proud- the social climbing soccer mom types well versed in the estrogen economy- after all, that's how they got what they wanted in life. But I've never met a dad like that. I don't know how they can stand to keep quiet when their daughters go out looking like that.
I got scolded by one of the trolls* for being sharing my opinion on this topic. She started screeching that 'you can't stop a girl from dressing the way she wants. As soon as she's out of sight, she'll change clothes. You can't do anything about it!' Bulloney. Move to the country, homeschool, boarding school in Tasmania, something!
*Troll, n. One of three hunchbacked, wrinkley, miserable women who work in the library at the boys' school. Known for grouchiness and scathing rudeness. Their screeches can be heard from great distances. Students are often known to scrawl "Beware of Trolls" on stickie notes and post them throughout the library.

Well, I hadn't thought of it in those terms before, but the fashion industry does put forth only tiny models that are so starved they have no breasts and no hips.
Sam, a Woman's size "Large" shorts at a store is about a size 14..... Would not fit Marilyn Monroe.

It may be true that your daughter will change clothes after she leaves the house, but that is no excuse to ALLOW her to wear that type of thing. When she changes, she will be aware she is doing something wrong and against your wishes.
I pulled that stunt a handful of times myself, but got tired of having to lug around a change of clothes and worry about someone spotting me and telling my parents. I soon gave it up. :)
Also, if I made the mistake of throwing the forbidden clothing in the hamper, they would vanish...never to be seen again.

She started screeching that 'you can't stop a girl from dressing the way she wants. Well, it's not failsafe, but how you've raised them from a very young age has a lot to do with it.

Well, it's not failsafe, but how you've raised them from a very young age has a lot to do with it. How you have raised them from a young age affects the lengths they will go to in order to not get caught doing something they shouldn't. It doesn't necessarily keep them from wanting to try it! ;~D
I goofed off, but I also knew I was goofing off and that I had better be careful about it. There were some friends where the line was not clear, and those are the ones who stay in trouble, for the rest of us, being bad was just a short adventure.

I have always supposed that those really scrawny models were more for the benefit of other women, since obviously no guy would find them attractive. Them and the clothes they are selling both are just plain weird.
Don't get me wrong, I think, for instance, that someone like Elle MacPherson is very pretty. I like thin, but not emaciated.
I regard a pair of jeans and a white shirt, almost any white shirt, as sexy on a lady. Not that anyone asked.
To: Sam Cree
OK, here's an attempt.
Hypothesis: The pre or early-pubescent (or younger) female body is the standard of beauty.
1) High fashion clothes are shown modeled on women without hips or bosoms. Models often have pouty looks, the type a child uses as manipulation.
2) Shirts are sized to be 'too small' as though the child suddenly out grew them. Cap sleeves, no easing around the bosom, and cropped to show the midriff. Cutsie and girlish phrases are often printed on the bosom: "Brat", "Princess". Some are very sexually suggestive "Tease", "Spank me", etc.
3) Pants and shorts are similarly small and tight. The tight cut around the hips and low rise suggests that the wearer suddenly outgrew the children's clothes.
4) Flares on the pants (nothing new, I know) and the bulky shoes are large in scale, making the wearer seem smaller and clumsy.
5) Fashionablly acceptable behavior and language requires the woman to squeek and giggle, and, like, act all immature, and stuff! Oh yaaaay! *giggle*
6) Hair is worn in sloppy ponytails- like a little girl.
Now, while young girls try to appear to be older and sexually available, adult women must try to maintain the teenage figure.
7) Women must be skinny- dangerously skinny. Hips and large bosoms are out. Stomachs must be flat like a youngster's.
8) Women must be hairless. Legs, pits, faces, arms, and elsewhere. Just like a child.
Now, I'm not a feminazi so I don't have the argument down pat- I may not have even convinced you. But it is there if you look for it and it is not healthy.

Well, it's not failsafe, but how you've raised them from a very young age has a lot to do with it. Bingo!
To: Lil'freeper
You've pointed out exactly the types of things I've noticed as "trends". I don't think you sound like a feminazi at all.

Well, can understand the beauty of thin women, don't get me wrong... What is wrong is that Marilyn Monroe would not fit into a size "Large" and would have to shop at a PLUS SIZE place. No one would look at a cross-section of American Women and decide that Marilyn was about the biggest they should need to make.

"Hypothesis: The pre or early-pubescent (or younger) female body is the standard of beauty" Not convinced that is really the case. Perhaps women think they may look good as children, but I don't think guys think so at all. I think this may be more of a female perception of beauty. All the weird clothes that are for sale, I've always thought women were dressing for other women most of the time, anyway.
I understand what you are saying well enough, Lil'freeper, I was just not convinced it was true. Extra skinny models have been around since I was a little kid, quite a while ago.
IMO, the peak of female beauty is reached in the 30's, after the first foal.
To: Lil'freeper
You have articulated some valid observations very well! I hadn't thought about the shaving part of it, and from the look of new swimsuits, ....(and recent Playboy-type pics I have seen) that isn't the only place they are shaving. That 'look' I did see as blatently trying to look pre-pubescent.

It doesn't necessarily keep them from wanting to try it! Like I said, it's not failsafe. We all have to go through a period of rebellion. But a lot of how people handle situations is based on what they learned when they were very young.
