The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Ok as I am still somewhat new to this thread, what do the elfbashers love then? Are they dwarf lovers? Or do they love men over all races? Or are they Hobbit lovers? Can someone give me some background please? What is the official platform of these "elfbashers"?

Hmm... I'd guess it is a response to all the swooning over the fey creatures... that, and dwarves were always the coolest characters in the books. Gimli won the orc killing contest!

Its probably the same reason why the Klingons and Ferengi have a huge following in Star Trek fandom. They are by far the most human characters. The humans (aside from the Maquis) usually are perfectly boring with no real problems. (and they are saddled with that Prime Directive conceived by that communist Roddenberry.)

The official platform is to bring down a bunch of snoots a peg or two....like what the Three Stooges do.

You mean like Gimli... when he decided that he had to start killing everyone who in any way slighted Galadriel?

Well I have a feeling I'll be listening to them again and again :-)

When you go looking for the unabridged version, without the dramatization, use Rob Inglis in your search as the 'author'. He is listed as such, on Books a Million, and when I did a search on his name, it shows all the Tolkien books he has done. There is set of the whole trilogy on Audio Cassette at Books a Million for $67; if you are a 'member' it is $60! That's a great price for all three books on cassette. The set on CD is $97, or $87 for the Member price. It is definitely less expensive than buying the three seperately, but it still is a big chunk o change!

Well...not really. It's more like the snoots at a Three Stooges dinner who end up in the middle of a pie fight.... It's not like anyone is defending anyone else's honor.

Sounds like at least the dwarf Gimli would be in the pie-fight on the elves side. Seems to me he was ready to take on all the Rohirrim to defend an elf.

ah hem. of course, that was in the book tale. somehow got left out of the movie.

I'm beginning to think that Peter Jackson may be at the root of all this elf-bashing.

Speaking for myself, it's the movie elves that got me started elf-bashing. Elrond with his "men are weak" stuff and his arrogance. He's a fine one to talk about the "dwarves care not" for the trouble of others when he's hauling his butt to Valinor himself. Just makes me want to smack him upside his scowling head.

And Haldir is almost as bad. "The dwarf breathes so loud we could shoot him in the dark." Is that any way to greet visitors? Yeah, I know he said it in the book, but it wasn't the first words out of his mouth and he said them only to Legolas.

At least Legolas and Galadriel were truer to their book counterparts.

...hands over ears... lalalala

Somehow, I love the book so much, that I manage to totally shut out the butchery of some of my favorite characters and scenes.

Not all of them are elves... Faramir. But, I've been over that much to much in this arena already.

I would probably never have given Haldir a second thought, except that my daughter went all gaga over him. Now, that was a funny part of the movie. (Okay, maybe you had to be there and hear her.)
