The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hey guys,

I just thought of a potential "plot hole" that PJ may have left open.

He tells Frodo that Boromir is dead. But how does he know this?

Unless I missed it, I don't believe he tells how he came to this knowledge (as he does in the book).

Yes, he said they found the boat coming down the river. Dialogue pretty much like the book. Although, I myself did not like what they did with Faramir at all, I did hear him get that part right.

For those who have seen TTT could you please share any info on the Arwen/Aragorn scenes? I have to be honest, and say that Arwen is my least favorite character in the movies so far, and someone a while back said that she "helps" Aragorn face down the Dark Lord when he sees Aragorn in the Seeing Stone. (Yuk) Was all that true? I'm also wondering if there are a bunch of "empty" love scenes between the two of them.......zzzzzzzzzzz. You know what I mean. Just putting them together for show instead of content. Although I AM impressed by what I've read of the clip showing Arwen later on having to deal with her decision on mortality. Any comments?
I'm planning on seeing TTT's on Friday, and I don't mind any spoilers, lol.

I didn't see Sauron seeing Aragorn in the Seeing Stone. Maybe that's in RoTK??? There's a couple of those love scenes. Not long like that extended thing on the bridge or whatever in FoTR. I didn't like that. I thought these were less irksome. Interestingly, for over 30 years Arwen has been one of my favorite characters in the book. With that history I guess I've let it slide that I was disappointed in her characterization. However, I was pleased that they included the small part in the film about Elrond's confrontation with her concerning her immortality and then foreshadowed the future of her dealing with it.

Don't know how much that helps.... or if its much of a spoiler, but I thought she was better in this one than the last one. Although it still could have used a little less syrup.

You know what? I've been lurking since before FoTR opened. Just shy I guess. But, I have moved to a new city, 200 miles from my host of longtime friends. I need something to do with my time now so I guess I finally just got couragous enough to jump in.

Maybe now we can get a definitive answer to this question: Was Arwen at Helm's Deep?

Here's a couple more if you have a minute.

Is Arwen relegated to flashback/forwards only? Does she steal another character's place in this movie (i.e. Glorfindel)?

I went to bed early -- work - as always :( - hot and heavy this morning. But I happened to wake up after falling asleep, and when I awoke the clock read 11:58.

And I thought: Aside from being wired on caffeine and probably with a body wondering why it wasn't asleep, Hair is probably just about as excited right at this moment as a human being gets!

The thought didn't last very long, as I crashed again almost immediately. But we (queen's we there) were thinking of you.

Jealousy (and anger at my work-load) is tinged by the nice thought that I still have my first viewing just ahead of me!

But, I have moved to a new city, 200 miles from my host of longtime friends.

And now you've arrived at The Hobbit Hole where you will find a new host of friends (hopefully longtime).

Welcome! You're not an elf are you?

Okay, not all us midnighter's have crashed. I'm surprised at my vitality today though. LOL Arwen was NOT at Helm's Deep. I was relieved.

Do you really want all these spoilers? While Aragorn was going through his recovery from the unauthorized tumble off a gargantuan cliff he flash-backs or something to time with he and Arwen. He does the flashback thing twice. Forget when the other time is.... OH NO! I must need to see the film again to refresh my memory!

They do the cut-away thing to show Arwen and Elrond's confrontation over Arwen staying in middle earth with the mortal Aragorn as opposed to sailing away.

She did NOT steal another character's place in the movie this time but it did show her marching (or walking) leaving Rivendell which sort of looked like she was doing Elrond's bidding and leaving to sail away. However, I wondered if she wasn't pretending to do that so she could follow the story line I keep hearing all the talk about and going to join the battle later in RoTK. That's purely my speculation though. Not in the movie.

It is quiet around here. I get to see it tonight at 8pm.

My daughter is driving down to watch it with me. Her dad is the one who started me reading the books in the very early 70's. (when I was just a girl) And he bought her a copy of the books when she was 7 or 8. He was a BIG Tolkien fan. Studied the Elvish language stuff pretty well and all. He died 6 years ago. So, we go together in his honor and remember his love for the books. Oi, he would love to be here for these movies, I know we would both love him to be with us too.

I'm Heeeeerrrreeee.....(in best Freaked out Frodo voice)

I'm so stunned with the movie that I can't formulate the words yet. Much like last year at this time...a mix of exhaustion and disbelief at what I'd seen.

I'll start with the fun stuff. The Line Party. It was great although as Jame mentioned there was some distress with the managment not holding up their end of the deal in a few instances, and they nearly wouldn't let us go in before everyone else (an agreement they'd made, but then I think they got cold feet when three lines of people started showing up...they didn't want to make anyone mad by letting us go in first. Ultimately we did get to go in first and got some excellent seats.)

First we went to the pizza parlor, and stuffed a mediterranian pizza in as fast as we could since we were running a little late. Then we went to the cinema where Steve met Jame right off the bat and we all introduced ourselves. Then Steve went off and played chess with every geek in the place and I sat with Jame and had a great time. I took the trivia test and as Jame said above, I got 2nd place!!! If I would have just got one more right, I would have tied for first and won because my time was better than the first place winner...I did 30 questions in 5 minutes. My prize was two books, The Two Towers (Ballantine, with the dreadful awful disgusting maps) and The Complete Guide to Middle-Earth. Also, a paint-it-yourself model kit of a bunch of Uruk-Hai.

I took a bunch of pictures which I plan on burning into a disk after Steve leaves for work (he's gone to pick up the boys right now). Then right before we lined up, they had the final contest and I won my Merry bust! It's very nice and is now sitting on my entertainment center, right beside the Cave Troll.

Then we lined up and they let us in. The previews were good...not soooo stupid as last year. Then the movie started. I was amazingly calm, although I was pirched on the very edge of my seat.

I'll tell you more about it in a while...Steve's home.
