The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I can't figure out how to step over it, but will try.

"Freshmen are still young enough to appreciate gross jokes and puns"

So are some of us older people.

Seriously, it sounds like a beautiful and rewarding day.

That's cool about your 'boys'. Our older sons attended a Xaverian Brothers' prep-school. The tradition part sounds similar, though I didn't hear much about pranks.

It was a VERY good school, and both boys have done well in college. The oldest got a full scholarship to UMass Amherst, and graduated last month. He's off to Cornell Law School in Sept.

#2 son has just finished his Jr. yr. at Carnegie Mellon. He actually 'graduates' in December, but he's gonna stay around to be a TA for a couple of his profs during the Spring semester. He's chewing on grad school ideas right now. Takes his GRE when he gets back to Pitt. in a couple of weeks.

I'm waiting for you to show up so we can discuss "Matrix Reloaded," which we saw yesterday. I've been away so much that I don't remember how you liked it.

Oh, hi!

Rose and I liked Matrix Reloaded a lot... saw it for a second time Friday night.

What did you think of it?

SC: Just popped in to say Hi; finished up the painting on the side we repaired last weekend; been doing a bit of garden renovation, but a siesta calls us now; Surprised to see the 40,000 up for grabs still; well, in order to continue the pleasant tradition of siesta, we must say Hasta la vista.

Our older 3 kids have seen it. We're waiting to see it on DVD along with our youngest so we can 'edit' some parts of it.

I want to see X-Men 2 again. I enjoyed it tremendously the first time I saw it. Next time, though, I'll watch X-1 first, the go see the new one immediately afterwards.

We saw X2 for the second time on Tuesday of last week... really enjoyed it a lot as well.

Just my opinion, but I think the "naughtiness" of Matrix Reloaded has been overblown a little... but then, it is an R-rated movie, so best to be safe.

With that I'll go do some baking!

I got a Zojirushi Bread Machine for Mother's Day and I just love it. I have some Cheese-Onion bread baking in it right now. I love homemade bread, but was too lazy to spend the time doing it. This way, I put everything in the machine and it does all the steps for me! I haven't tried the adding fruit step yet, but will do that next. Want to make some cinnamon raisin bread. I also want to try to make a dark rye bread with raisins. I think it is like a Russian Black bread. We had some at a seafood restaurant in town. It was a yeast bread that was very dark, slightly sweet, and had raisins. I'm gonna 'speriment'!

Our 15 yr. old daughter went with some friends and their father. It is our 13 yr. old son who I don't want seeing it in full right now. After having seen it, our daughter agrees.

Yes... probably a little much for a 13-year old.

Congrats on two well-educated sons! I had no experience with Catholic schools before working for this one and I am impressed with how good a job they do. You could tell right away which of the freshmen were coming in from a public school- they were deficient in all areas: writing skills, speaking skills/courtesy, organization. Even the handwriting was better in the Catholic-educated kids.

Now that I know a little more, and if it's impossible to homeschool my (future) children, I'll send them to Catholic schools. But not the Jesuits- they are waaaaaaaaaay too liberal. There's a flaming (in many ways gossip has it) liberal Jesuit in charge of the school now and the environment is souring. It's less about Christ and 'being a brother for others' and more about courting the money. Also, fewer and fewer scholarships are being offered to the kids from the city. Word is that the school has a 'reputation' to maintain. Yes, I'll avoid the Jesuits, but Catholic education is alright in my book.

I liked it pretty well, though I haven't seen the original yet. I hadn't realized that it was a "chop socky" movie. The fighting is cool, but sometimes gets a little monotonous. The "freeway" was a good scene, even if it reminded me a little of "grand theft auto."

I was rather captivated by Zion, and its depressing "machine world underground" aspect.

Anyway, it was fun. When is the conclusion coming out, do you know?
