The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Yep.... Horses will always be able to go places that machines can't. And they impart a calm in me in the woods. It is so quiet, hoofbeats and woods sounds. I hope Bay and I will be able to go this year.

Eeek. I gotta get some dishes and housework done so I can go to town.

Yeah, I am sitting here copying a drawing by Rubens, homework includes one copy a week of a drawing by an old master. Then I am going out and draw the remains of a strangler fig that has got hold of a small boulder.

I need to make a project of photographing them all, then I can put them up on a web host somewhere.

My dogs have been eating mangos, which make them sick.

I'm back from church... it was very good. We're having a beautiful day here. Maybe I will Do Something this afternoon.

Penny, I have tried to upload the spreadsheet with the castle cost breakdown to the yahoo site, but for the life of me I cannot get long enough access to the Yahoo files section to get it loaded. Yahoo is not functioning, or it is just me. Keeps telling me the files section is unavailable.

So here it is: un-pretty and un-formatted.

Castle breakdown - costs
The whole cost is $2335 rent plus $2000 deposit.

Rent / Number paying Rent + $2000 Deposit returned afterwards)
( $2,335 / 20 = $117 )+( 2000 / 20 = $100 ) ~ Total Cash= $217
( $2,335 / 19 = $123 )+( 2000 / 19 = $105 ) ~ Total Cash= $228
( $2,335 / 18 = $130 )+( 2000 / 18 = $111 ) ~ Total Cash= $241
( $2,335 / 17 = $137 )+( 2000 / 17 = $118 ) ~ Total Cash= $255
( $2,335 / 16 = $146 )+( 2000 / 16 = $125 ) ~ Total Cash= $271
( $2,335 / 15 = $156 )+( 2000 / 15 = $133 ) ~ Total Cash= $289
( $2,335 / 14 = $167 )+( 2000 / 14 = $143 ) ~ Total Cash= $310
( $2,335 / 13 = $180 )+( 2000 / 13 = $154 ) ~ Total Cash= $333
( $2,335 / 12 = $195 )+( 2000 / 12 = $167 ) ~ Total Cash= $361
( $2,335 / 11 = $212 )+( 2000 / 11 = $182 ) ~ Total Cash= $394 < I think we are *at least* about here
( $2,335 / 10 = $234 )+( 2000 / 10 = $200 ) ~ Total Cash= $434

So the whole cost is $2335 rent plus $2000 deposit.
Taking the total and dividing it by the deadline dates they need the money,
and the number of paying participants (kids and spouses don't pay - one charge per HHD)

Needed May: Rental Deposit to hold it:
Total Cost / Number paying
$535 / 20 = $27
$535 / 19 = $28
$535 / 18 = $30
$535 / 17 = $31
$535 / 16 = $33
$535 / 15 = $36
$535 / 14 = $38
$535 / 13 = $41
$535 / 12 = $45
$535 / 11 = $49 < This has been paid already
$535 / 10 = $54

Needed July: Remainder of Rent
Total Cost / Number paying
$1,800 / 20 = $90
$1,800 / 19 = $95
$1,800 / 18 = $100
$1,800 / 17 = $106
$1,800 / 16 = $113
$1,800 / 15 = $120
$1,800 / 14 = $129
$1,800 / 13 = $138
$1,800 / 12 = $150
$1,800 / 11 = $164
$1,800 / 10 = $180

Needed September - Damage Deposit (this part would be refunded later)
Total Cost / Number paying
$2,000 / 20 = $100
$2,000 / 19 = $105
$2,000 / 18 = $111
$2,000 / 17 = $118
$2,000 / 16 = $125
$2,000 / 15 = $133
$2,000 / 14 = $143
$2,000 / 13 = $154
$2,000 / 12 = $167
$2,000 / 11 = $182
$2,000 / 10 = $200

Well, I'm back.

And call it a morning well spent. I just got back from graduation at the school I taught at until this year. The weather forecast called for overcast skies, windy, and temps near 70. So I wore a lovely summer-weight dress with sassy sandals. Ooooooh, big mistake. It never got out of the 50's, the wind chill had to be in the 40s, and it drizzled for most of the outdoor ceremony. It was miserable; my poor toes nearly froze off.

Regardless, it was an absolutely lovely ceremony. The school is a Jesuit prep-school, all male, that is 151 years old. Some of the legacy students are third and fourth generation. The place oozes tradition, the kind that's easy to get swept up in.

I met the boys that graduated today when they were freshmen. It was my first year at that school so we went through the learning curve together. We had a really nice rapport. Freshmen are still young enough to appreciate gross jokes and puns. And other than being absentminded knuckleheads, they were really wonderful young people.

A large number of the boys that were in my environmental science class showed up again their junior year for chemistry. I think that was my favorite year teaching, it was also my last. I had a couple very small classes (one as small as 8!) and it afforded time to really get to know those kids. Who was dating whom, who got dumped this week, why girls are evil, what band is playing where, who wrecked their car and other very important subjects.

A small group appointed themselves my 'favorite pests'. They'd occasionally ransack my office and play harmless little pranks. One time they licked a bajillion starch-based packing peanuts and stuck them on every surface in my office. They called it 'art'. They abducted my mole figurines and keys. They'd leave silly notes on the overhead projector. One group thought they were chemistry superheros and would 'fly' like superman down the hall to the chem lab, with their aprons fluttering behind them. The same crew would wear their goggles all during class- it gave them "chemvision". Such goofballs. They were truly a fun group of kids.

I was very weepy during the ceremony remembering all the trials and tribulations (it wasn't all rosey) and here they were all grown up and looking very spiffy in their white dinner-jacket tuxedos. Scary how time flew. They started off as kids and now they're pretty much men; going off to college in the fall. I got lots of hugs from them and that meant a lot to me.

Whew! With that I'll go do some baking!

What a cool day!

That is a neat post about the traditions and the pranks (They must have really liked you) and the tears!

I am off now, to buy everything I am out of, and some flowers if my humor lasts.

Thanks for that breakdown on the Entmoot Castle costs. I've made notes on my calender reminding me to send the payments the middle of the month before they're needed so ksen has the money on time.

Dogs seem to love mangos, but they really get their stomachs upset by eating them. If I see one get one, they have to sleep outside that night.
