The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Oh my goodness...what is that dish to the left of the deviled eggs?

Happy Birthday Rose!
Where is Bear taking you for dinner?

Bay also came to me with the habit of wanting a face rub after taking the bridle off.... I let him get away with that one... In fact, at his age I give him quite a bit of latitude to do some things his way. He likes to stop to poop, I think that is the least I can do. I guess most trail riders give their horse that dignity, I guess it really only mattered that they keep pace when I was showing.

I know what you mean. My FIL would take delight in throwing one of those phrases at me just to see the puzzled look come over my face.
The laughs that man had at my expense!
I miss him.

And you are right.... my horses are friendly anyway, and I don't usually have treats on hand. If I do buy a bag of carrots or something and hand-feed them those, by the time the bag is gone they are trying to push on me.

Yeah, I let them stop to poop. But the head rubbing can be very annoying. The minute I reach up to take the head stall he swings his head over and about knocks me down or hits my face, I haven't figured out how to correct him, I hate slapping a horse in the face or around the head, then you land up with the exact oppisite problem, head shy., right now I am just stepping away from him when he starts, and don't take anything off till he stands still, but it doesn't seem to be working, he's pretty bad about it...any other suggestions??

I had a neighbor that got her first horse after moving here. Seems everyone who moves out here tries the horse thing., most don't make it. Any way she would go out to "play" with her horse by taking a carrot, letting him see it then she would take off running and play "chase" I couldn't believe it. Then she would hide the carrot in a pocket for him to find. She went out one time with no carrot, he started charging toward her, when he got to her, he sniffed her pockets the bit at the one that was on her shirt, over her boob. Like to bit it off. I saw that coming way before it happened, and tried to tactfully tell her she was teaching him bad things, but people just insist on treating these animals like dogs, instead of 1200 lb working animals. Yeah, they are pets to a certain way of thinking but not like a dog at all.

Good morning! Going to get the chicks in about an hour!
To: PayNoAttentionManBehindCurtain
I know what you mean about slapping him.... If you did, or if you hollered "ACK" at him, his head would go straght in the air, too, and at least this way he is giving you his head and you want that part.
I guess I would use the other hand to physically hold his nose where you want it, by either holding firm on top of his nose or under his chin, depending on where he needs the pressure.
I had a friend whose horse was throwing his head up whenever she took the bridle off (different cause, she was clanking his teeth with the bit and he didn't like that)
But the solution might be the same. I had her take the bridle off in two steps to be extra careful, first off the ears, and then holding the bit still in position but gathering up and holding the bridle over his nose until he was perfectly still, and then gently ease it out. the better she got at doing it, the less she clanked his teeth, and the better he got becasue he stopped fearing it, but it was really about holding his head perfectly still while bridling

supposed to be biscuits and sausage gravy, but I realized that those aren't biscuits! LOL!

That sounds like a good plan. Like I told Becky...this can be like our "test" chickens...see how we do with them.

I do not want to rain on your parade, but have you called ahead to make sure Atwoods has chicks now. I've been there a few times, but never seen chicks. Of course I wasn't looking for them, but I don't want you disappointed again.
Becky
To: Wneighbor
We need to moot anyway! A picnic somewhere where the kids can play on a playset or something while we visit would be best...
