The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

My farrier hasn't called me back yet, I left a message. He is the best that I know in town, and we will see how he does with him! - There are farriers in town I would not want at this point.

Bay was just shod on Monday. - $$$$ down the tube!

You have an accent? I didn't notice.

Ohio? You should have whacked him. Ohio accents are so different from yours.

I do not have a Pittsburgh accent, so anyone who knows what a Pgh accent sounds like can be relieved ;-) I won't be saying "yinz guys". But I might use "slippy" if called for. "Slippy" is a cool word.

I liked Tailchaser pretty much, very pretty book in some ways. I might wait for the new one to come out in paperback.

Glad you liked it! Tailchaser's a cute story.

Yeah, War of the Flowers was good but I could have waited. Only I didn't want to wait.

Read anything else good lately?

Well, I might want to, but a talented vocal person I am not. I have a student from up north right now that stops me sometimes for translations in class. I always have to start with "What part did you not understand?" The response usually is telling me that it sounded like gibberish or something.

When I lived in Washington State I was very shy. I had a horror of talking to people I didn't know. I went to the grocery store once a week and the cashiers had come to know me. They would always say, "Say something, I just love to hear you talk." I was horrified. Every time, the response would be (in Texan) 'wull, wha' do ya wont me ta say?'

He said it would sell. :) The average time comparable houses in my area spent on the market is 2.3 months with the longest being 5.2 months. I figure with the relocation bonus I can carry 7 to 10 months of mortgage payments....depending on how much they withhold from the bonus check and how much I spend on furniture storage/moving.

WN&JB-accents are a wonderful thing, Jen, I'll bet you don't think you have one, but you probably do, even a born & bred Missourian has one, (born on the Yankee side of the state, living on the Southern).

We were doing a job in Arkansas, a Rails-to-Trails study, the railroad engineer was from the Boston Office, had to do a bit of translating between the engineers on that one.

Accents are fun, go with them.

Yes, but I have a fairly bland accent, like what most people on tv have. I suppose to someone from far off, it would sound odd, though.

See what we don't have to worry about using computers?

It's not so easy to find agreeable or good books. I have Jacques Barzun's tome, "From Dawn to Decadence, 500 Years of Western Culture," but haven't read the thing yet.

Started a couple times though ;-)

Let's see, read all the Nero Wolf stuff years ago.

Maybe some Lazarus Long?

Of course it depends on my ability to keep the house neat and uncluttered for a few months...BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Some friends recently sold a beautiful house and moved only 2 or 3 blocks. My wife and me think they moved because the place got so messy they couldn't stand it.

The same thing will happen to me if I don't watch it.

I dunno if it's $65 to shoe all round where you are - that's the going rate here for an "average farrier" with a cat hat and pickup truck - but if you take the long view, that's just a drop in the bucket (my mare's supplement is $40 a pop, and she runs through a can in about 3 weeks . . . << eek! >> ) I look at it this way - I don't smoke or gamble, I don't go out to movies, go out to dinner once a month maybe, and drink maybe a glass of wine a month with said dinner. All that discretionary income is spent on the horsey stuff . . . :-D

Bay's shoeing used to cost $60... not sure what it will be now.

I have a few of those vices you mention and have to spend the same amount on the horses!

Least I am not boarding him somewhere and the pony is cheap to feed!

Jen; true enough, but I do wish they had a spell check on here on FR (and on the Stickbow site).

An interesting variation on accents is the speed at which people talk, the people from the east coast offices talk faster than the ones from the southern offices. I really notice the difference.

But for Computer the internet (and WEB-TV) my typing suffices. Luckily I took typing in high school and never really forgot it. Anybody else learn to type on a Brown Royal Office model, complete with carriage return and bell? lol.

OT: Good news on the house front it sounds, have you practiced "home on the range" yet on your flute?

A friend who recently moved said that housekeeping was the biggest problem, they were used to a "comfortable lifestyle". I can dig it.

Yes, I've noticed the same about north versus south. I think it's probably cultural. But I won't complain if people tell me to slow down at Entmoot; wouldn't do to be hasty!

. . . that's why they call it "discretionary income".

I have got to head off to bed. Big day tomorrow - one kid at home (school's out for him!) one kid in exams, and a big day prepping two horses and a pony for the Pony Club show upcoming . . . makes me tired just thinking about it, braiding all those manes . . . yawn!

Good night, all!
