The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

OK, I got a javascript countdown going on the
Entmoot '04 page. The one I want to use doesn't seem to work properly, but I'll work on it some more as time permits.
Gotta grab something to eat and get to work. Later!

The sun is sorta' shining. We finally have a lovely sunny day here, but it's supposed to rain AGAIN tonight!! I'm gonna put some grass seed down after our son finishes mowing. I treated it, so supposedly it will germinate quickly. That's great because I want to fill in some spots in the yard quickly.
Good luck getting your foundations dug!! We're considering not putting a big basement in our new house. If we build new, we'll put in a small basement area for utilities, manifolds for the radiant heating system, etc. but we don't particularly like basements, so we're just gonna do a pier and slab foundation system. We have to have piers because of the frost heaves, and we'll do a trench system with a short wall around the slab, but we're not gonna dig a big hole and have to go and back fill it, etc.

And my boss seems to have ditched, which complicates things.Hey, if the boss-man isn't there, he won't know if YOU aren't!!!
To: Corin Stormhands
That ought to work.... not sure I would be able to breathe or move, but what is more important, anyway?

I love our Entmoot page! Very cool!

I'll just send you home with the incubator and a batch of eggs, that way you would surely get some hens:) That sounds like a great Unit Study on chickens!!!

now a hatchling vigil thru the cracks... They'll hear them before they see them! Those are some noisy little birdies!! Joseph built a bird house two years ago as part of a Cub Scout requirement and we have it haning just off our deck. It is so funny to hear the babies in there when it is feeding time!
This past winter, we hung a bird feeder off the same T-pole, about 3 feet away from the bird house. Now, whenever a bird comes to the feeder, if the wren is up on the top of the T, he fusses at the other birds that are too close to his nest. We saw him run a squirrel off the feeder a couple of days ago. Just divebombed the thing!! It was hilarious!

Has anyone let ToRN know about the adventures of Flat Frodo yet?

Oh, have you ever visited NES?

That sounds like a great Unit Study on chickens!!! You're darn-tootin' it does!

Not yet.... was going to wait until we have a few chapters in so they could really have a feel for what we are doing.... You think now there is enough good info to report with LilFreepers cool WA DC stuff?
To: PayNoAttentionManBehindCurtain
Not specifically, no. I sometimes look in the religion forum and come away from it shocked and awed.... but I do know the NES is a pretty friendly chat thread.
To: HairOfTheDog; Overtaxed
Yeah, now may good. Isn't OT next on the list? If she gets him and is going to get stuff in relatively soon, then it probably wouldn't hurt to wait until her pics are in and posted.

I knew that:)
Your talking of the "religion wars" though gives a bad impression of the NES. Actually the regulars over there are no different then the regulars here when we are not talking religion. Thre are some things that people should have passion about. I have slacked off a bunch posting there about religion, I think it has all been said. The results of those discussions are out of our hands now. But I still want to keep up with everyone there especialy the ones on NES.
Talking of your scars:), you know I think you inflicted a few on others yourself. I have been surprised at the difference I see in you here vs. the impression I had of you from over there. Made me wonder how many others over there may actually be nice people:).....I thought all the nice ones over there were only the ones on NES:) Shows how getting to know people on an all around basis is different than just on one topic.

I said "No, No Madamoiselle. It ees zee French who have failed zee world..." We're trying to convince our #1 son, who starts Law School in the fall, to learn Japanese. He took French all through high school, and needs to learn more converstional skills. He had thought about Japanese, but was concerned it was too hard. His little sister is trying to convince him that is isn't so bad; she's teaching herself the language right now!
Is Jr. interested in Japanese Anime? That's how Clare got started learning it. She'll watch the anime with the subtitles once, then watch it again and again without them so she can learn the Japanese words and expressions. She also reads Manga (Comic book novels) in the original language.

Why shocked and awed?
BTW, I am not wanting to discuss religion here, just what shocked and awed you?

I throw out a lot of stuff thinking..I just don't have the time to make order out of this stuff anymore. We're in the process of de-junking to prepare for a move next year. I spent a couple of hours in the basement last night gathering stuff for the Girl Scouts big yard sale on Saturday. I'm getting rid of a lot of craft stuff I've had for YEARS, always thinking I'd get around to doing it someday. Well, not any more. The only things I'm keeping are the acrylic paints, paintbrushes and wooden items to paint, and my jewelry stuff. I've always wanted to learn how to do decorative painting, so I will keep those, and Clare and I like to do the jewelry, so I'll keep that stuff, too!

Don't worry, I think we all know the NES thread is different than the general flame war threads.
I am glad that there is a place where it is friendly over there.
We are different here, in that we all get the cold sweats if someone here gets offended and we trip over ourselves trying to fix it! We care more about each other here than any particular issue, and the one or two times that hot issues came into the thread, we all get nervous. We have never had cross words here, and I hope we never do.

What kind of dog is she? That can have alot to do with how well they come when called.Tell me about it! We had Goldens and Labs growing up...they were almost always pretty obedient. Fiona is a dachshund, and though she CAN be good...she often isn't. She knows plenty of commands, and when I'm within reach she's very good at obeying, but when I'm not...obedience often goes out the window.

We have a table cloth made from a flour sack.I have a quilt that was one of the last my great-aunt ever made. I was visiting her once, with my Daddy just after SSQ and I got married. She gave me the quilt, and I think that the back of it was made with flour sacks. It is neat!
